JOB DETAILS:  Head Gardener (possible accommodation provided)

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a dynamic, hands-on Head Gardener to manage 10 acres of beautiful grounds of a Grade 2 * listed manor house in central Oxfordshire. This historically important Bloomsbury linked garden has an Italian influence and is currently being restored and developed in conjunction with the owners and garden designers.

The garden, which is open to the public for regular village events and occasional charity visits, has a substantial walled cutting parterre, box and yew topiary and hedging, herbaceous borders, fine lawns, an orchard, several spring fed ponds, and vintage greenhouses. It is managed organically with a constant focus on increasing biodiversity and sustainability.

The owners are looking for a passionate plants person with a minimum RHS level 2 qualification (ideally 3) or equivalent, with a minimum of 5 years gardening experience. Further specialist training can be provided if necessary.

The role requires an in-depth knowledge of propagation, planting, pruning, watering, maintenance, tuber and bulb lifting and storing and general excellent plant care. The garden has a wealth of roses, peonies, dahlias and fruiting trees in addition to mixed borders and herbaceous planting. A keen eye for detail and order are essential.

You will also be responsible for managing the garden and garden staff including work schedules and watering rotas, holiday rotas, overseeing health and safety and training - including the training of apprentices when applicable. You must have a proven ability to work well with contractors, designers and suppliers and have worked effectively within garden teams and be an excellent communicator.

There is an estate vehicle for work-related use, and you will need to possess a clean driving licence. We require you to have an excellent command of English, be fit and active and be an enthusiastic self-starter. The role will require an enhanced DBS check.

HOURS:  Seasonal and by arrangement. On average 40 hours per week with some weekend watering as required.

SALARY: Salary in line with PGG scale - £35,000-£41,000 per annum DOE and accommodation provision.
