Sole Gardener, with assistance
Chastleton Glebe, Moreton in Marsh
We are seeking an experienced hands-on Gardener with drive and enthusiasm, who will relish the challenge and opportunity to join us at an exciting time as we restore and create new gardens and will then take responsibility for the running of the gardens.
A historic private Cotswold country house (formerly a Georgian rectory, enlarged by the Victorians) sitting at the centre of a small estate comprising 120 acre farmland (managed by farm contractors), a Lodge (with tenants), a Cottage, Outbuildings and a Barn conversion.
The principal house, Chastleton Glebe, is nearing completion after lengthy conservation and extensive renovations. The 5-acre gardens surrounding the main house are being re-developed under the guidance of renowned garden designer, Harriet Parsons to a classic style, with a soft colour pallet and beautiful planting. The wider estate is Certified Organic, and the garden will be guided by best environmental practice.
The main house gardens are to be planted this winter and will be made up of ornamental borders, a newly restored walled garden (for fruit, vegetables and cut flowers), a new Hartley Botanic glasshouse for propagation and house plants, a swimming pool, a lake, woodland gardens, meadows, mature and newly planted parkland, a tennis court, informal and formal lawns, and adjacent areas of wildflowers.
ROLE:
The successful applicant will be responsible for the ongoing maintenance and improvement of the gardens – and liaising with the owners and designer over any significant changes.
You should have enthusiasm and passion to help with the restoration and ongoing establishment of the new gardens and ensure that these gardens are maintained to the highest level. You should have excellent communication and man-management skills, be a self starter and be self-motivated, willing and able to establish the right working routine to make the garden look its best. Excellent plant knowledge, horticultural skills and experience of organic gardening are essential.
You will oversee all horticultural aspects with support from a full time Site Manager / Groundsperson and a P/T gardener (3 days per week). You will also be involved in recruiting seasonal or part-time help if required. We are looking to create a happy and positive team who enjoy being collectively collaborative and supportive of each other.
The role is primarily hands-on. The property is a private home where the family resides permanently (2 children and 2
dogs). They may be required to work the odd weekend if there’s an important family event. An enhanced CRB check will be required. A full UK driving license is essential.
LOCATION: 7 miles from Moreton-in-Marsh.
SALARY: Dependent on experience but will reflect the Professional Gardeners Salary Guidelines 2024 for a “Head Gardener” circa £36,000 - £45,000. Accommodation is not provided, but the generous salary reflects this.
