Picton Castle Gardens, The Rhos, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire
£24,608 plus pension
Closing date
22 Jul 2024

We are looking for a gardener to join our team of enthusiastic and hardworking staff who care for the extensive gardens that surround Picton Castle. Located within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, Picton Castle Gardens is an historic house, dating from the 13th century. We are run by a charitable trust and are open year-round to the public.

We are an RHS partner garden with a recently restored Walled Garden as a key feature, filled with annual display beds, ornamental pond, herbaceous plantings and mediterranean bed. Attached to that is a newly created educational area with a glasshouse and wildlife demonstration garden. There is also an indoor fernery. Other key areas of the garden include Peach House Gardens and Woodland which have vast herbaceous beds and collections of Hydrangeas and Ferns. Our Jungle Garden has a collection of Hardy Gingers and many other exotic plants.

What it is like to work here

You will be joining our friendly, helpful team. Reporting to the Head and Assistant Head Gardener and working alongside two full-time gardeners and a trainee. As a public garden, all staff are expected to engage with the public, volunteers and our charitable outreach work. You will be required to work occasional weekends and bank holidays on a rota basis (equivalent to one weekend in eight).

Core Areas of your Work

As a newly created role, you will have responsibility for the maintenance and presentation of our mixed borders of shrubs, herbaceous and annual plants, particularly within the popular Walled Garden. You will be responsible for raising annuals and plants for the garden and for overwintering less hardy varieties. You will be expected to engage with the public, leading volunteers and assisting training trainees, as appropriate.

Occasionally you will be expected to help with maintenance or development projects in other parts of the garden.

While the gardens are informal in style, we wish to maintain high standards of presentation. You will be assisted and supported in all these activities as required.

We are looking for someone

Trained to RHS level 2 or with equivalent work experience. Reasonable plant knowledge. Confident working within a team or on your own. Confident in leading and supervising volunteers, ideally with some experience of supervision. Confident in engaging with the public in a polite and helpful manner. Good communication skills. A willingness to use all garden machinery as required to fulfill your role. Training will be supplied, if required. Self-motivated and with a strong work ethic and a wish to maintain high standards. With a love of gardening and working outdoors. Fluency in Welsh is desirable but not essential. Valid driving license is essential (due to our rural location and lack of public transport)

We are a supportive employer, with generous annual leave and employment rights. We promote personal development and will provide training where possible related to your role. We are an equal opportunities employer.
