Head Gardener

This is an exciting opportunity for a knowledgeable and energetic horticulturalist to work with the owner and existing Estate Manager to bring on the newly planted garden to its full fruition and develop new areas.

The garden surrounds one of the most beautiful houses in Bath. Mazzullo Russell have been employed to help re-design the majority of the planting around the house over time, including long herbaceous borders, a rose garden and Mediterranean style borders. Contractors will be employed to do the majority of the installation work but the successful candidate will become a very important part of the renovation of the gardens and be maintaining them moving forward.

The gardener’s role would be to work with landscape designers Mazzullo+Russell alongside the client to nurture the garden to its full potential. The gardener would have sole charge of all herbaceous borders, greenhouse and small kitchen garden/propagation area leaving the Estate Manager and supporting contractors to run the wider estate.

The suitable candidate must be interested in plants and plantsmanship with a good experience of all forms of horticulture from maintaining borders to propagation, shrub pruning to rose pruning. The gardener would be expected to help develop the garden in the future with additional planting, bulb layers and an interest in pots and creating seasonal pot displays would also be of interest.

The candidate would be expected to be very hands on but also capable of recruiting and running outside contractors as required. The candidate would not be responsible for lawns, machinery, irrigation, pools, tennis court or wider landscape issues but would be wholly responsible for all matters relating to borders, house plants, pots and propagation. The job entails everything from basic border mulching and digging to skilled pruning and is never dull.

The job will also involve a certain amount of administration, including sourcing plants and sundries.

The garden runs in a series of terraces down a valley to a lake and woodlands beyond. There is a main terrace with long herbaceous borders flanking stone balustrades, formal steps to a Mediterranean style borders, a rose garden and a small swimming pool garden.
