JOB SPECIFICATION:

An exciting new opportunity has arisen at a private country house in the Surrey Hills. The role is for an experienced full-time Gardener to work as part of a small team.

There is also another team of part time horticulturists and a garden advisor. The estate comprises formal gardens, parkland, waterways, woodland, and leisure facilities.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

This role will suit a hands-on gardener with proven experience taking responsibility for the maintenance and development of a very special garden to a high standard. Parts of the gardens and grounds were originally designed and laid out by Gertrude Jekyll and the house was designed by Lutyens. 

The Candidate will be involved in all aspects of the maintenance and presentation of the gardens, grounds and outside areas.

The Candidate must maintain a high standard of horticulture through the application of specialist horticultural skills to sustain and develop an outstanding garden.

Undertake horticultural tasks including but not limited to: grass cutting, edging, pruning, dead heading, weeding, planting, glasshouse maintenance, hedge cutting, hard landscape maintenance, composting etc.

General estate work, maintenance of waterways and safe operation of machinery.

Comply with all current Health and Safety legislation.

When and if called upon to do so, supervise contract workers and visiting specialists.

The Candidate may also be required to drive the Client on occasions and so they must be willing to adapt their role when required.

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:

A broad knowledge of garden, glasshouse and landscape maintenance, ideally on a private estate, historic or botanical garden setting.

Ability to work at speed while delivering consistently high-quality horticultural outcomes.

Also, preferable would-be certificates in chemical (PA1 & PA6A) and chainsaw (CS30.1 & CS30.2) use.

Demonstrable horticultural skills and the ability to work alone or with small teams.

Capacity to communicate clearly in both written and oral forms.

The role will also enquire occasional driving and so a full clean driving licence is essential. Your own transport is a must due to the rural location.

In terms of personal qualities – drive, energy, high personal standards, and enthusiasm will be important values to be able to demonstrate.

Integrity and discretion are a must as well as good time management.
