Head Gardener

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and hands on Head Gardener, with great horticulture skills, to lead and manage a small team of gardeners, in the care for a stunning and varied two acre garden. In addition, the upkeep of two other gardens in the village is also overseen by the Head Gardener. These gardens include extensive lawns, wild flower meadow, orchard, and small woodland.

The garden is diverse in its planting, with mixed herbaceous borders, rock and dry gardens, shade borders and woodland. There are extensive lawns, requiring good experience and knowledge in the care and maintenance of fine turf. There is also a small vegetable garden, and glasshouse, used for propagation and growing of veg and annuals, as well as overwintering plants.

The applicant must have past experience in managing and leading teams, as strong communication skills between both the garden and management team are important.

The role requires a very hands-on approach, therefore a good of knowledge of trees, shrubs and plants is essential for carrying out all day to day gardening tasks and training the staff in these skills. Good observation skills are also important, as well as an understanding of pest, disease and plant health management.

Experience of professionally installed irrigation systems is also beneficial. Chemical spray certificate and chainsaw licenses are both desirable but not essential, as training can be provided.

The Head Gardener will also be responsible for the care and servicing of all garden machinery, as well as managing repair work when required.

The role calls for a keen eye for detail, positive attitude, strong work ethic, self-motivation, a good sense of humour, and passion for horticulture.

The new Head Gardener will report to the property owner and estate manager.
