“Salary will reflect the Professional Gardeners Guild Salary Guidelines for Sole Gardener.  A three bedroom house and car are also provided”.

This permanent position is full time and would suit a friendly, ambitious gardener who is keen to find a new challenge, willing to manage him/herself in conjunction with a small estate team, including a part-time groundsman and apprentice.

An appreciation of the climate challenges of a Hebridean island is important as the gardens, situated in one of Europe's most picturesque areas, are exposed to wind and salt sprays.

The post will suit a true plantsperson with good horticultural identification skills and understanding of the seasons. Applicants with a minimum level 2 horticultural qualification and previous experience working on a private estate are preferred. Current PA1/PA6 spraying and garden machinery (strimmer, chainsaw, ride on mower) operating certificates are required together with a knowledge of relevant health and safety regulations and a full driving licence.

Other aptitudes sought for the role are:

Good communications abilities; silvicultural knowledge, including practical tree and arboretum management; producing fruit, vegetables and flowers for the house; liaising with the Estate Factor in preparing and managing the garden budget; carrying out maintenance of garden buildings, tools and equipment; taking care of the swimming pool.

The applicant should be willing to work independently in all weathers, have the drive to get the job done to a high standard and a vision for developing the gardens in conjunction with the owners

Applicants must be physically fit, presentable, positive in their approach to the job, able to manage their time efficiently and apply attention to detail.
