Job Details

Due to the retirement of our existing Garden Supervisor we are looking for a passionate and creative person to nurture one of the country's most prestigious gardens, inspire visitors from across the world, and lead our garden team. Brimming with historic character and exciting gardening opportunities, Osborne offers a remarkable setting in which to take the next step in your career within a busy, skilled and dynamic garden team with 11 staff, including 2 trainees, and 65 volunteers.

As one of two Garden Supervisors you'll work closely with our Head Gardener to lead and organise the garden team to ensure the gardens and landscape are shown off to the highest standards of presentation.

You'll be playing a vital role in developing the grounds to ensure they reflect the grandeur that would have been familiar to Queen Victoria. You will be involved in all areas of the garden from the Contemporary Heritage Walled Garden with its glasshouses, herbaceous borders and trained fruit, to the magnificent bedding displays on the Terraces, and beyond into the pleasure grounds and parkland. And you'll find imaginative ways of bringing to life the stories that they tell, helping visitors of all ages to make new discoveries.

We're looking for someone with a creative eye; high-quality garden experience; great plant knowledge and horticultural skills; and a talent for team supervision. You'll know how to ensure visitors enjoy their day out, from sharing your gardening knowledge, to ensuring their health and safety, along with being able to supervise and motivate an enthusiastic, dedicated team of gardeners and volunteers.

The ability to use and demonstrate all necessary horticultural craft skills, machinery use and maintenance to the highest standards are a must for this busy and dynamic role.

Everyone is welcome at English Heritage and we are always looking for people who reflect the diversity of the country today, to help us make it more relevant to the diversity of the people, communities and places we serve. From remote sites to inner city monuments, from regional teams to our Head Office, the diversity of our teams is critical to making sure our heritage is inclusive, exciting and accessible.

We continually look for new ways to promote the past in a way that is inclusive to all and that celebrates the cultural diversity of England's heritage. By joining English Heritage, you will be part of a charity that is already on an exciting journey to tell everyone's story.

You'll find it's a workplace like no other - taking you behind the scenes of these extraordinary sites and supporting you to share your ideas, inspire others and make a difference.

By joining us, you'll enjoy the rewards of a great team environment in inspiring locations, helping to make our site a wonderful place to visit. You'll also be joining our charity, which through our 400+ historic monuments, buildings and sites, brings the story of England to life for over 10 million visitors each year.

Benefits include:

The opportunity to progress your career within the heritage sector;

  • Apprenticeship opportunities
  • Subscriptions to professional bodies
  • Free access to all English Heritage sites for you another adult and up to 6 children (under 18 in the family group)
  • 25% discount in our shops and cafes;
  • Enhanced Maternity/Paternity/Shared Parental leave
  • 25 days holiday plus Bank Holidays pro rata rising to 28 days after 3 years, with the option to buy additional leave
  • Matched pension contributions up to a maximum of 10% which can be paid via salary exchange or salary deduction
  • Flexible hours.

Interviews will be held on week commencing 16th January at Osborne House

Joining us means working somewhere a little different. A career with us as part of our Gardens Team could see you conserve and restore some of the most significant gardens in England, and enable our visitors to enjoy the great cultural heritage of our gardens.

We have dedicated garden teams who maintain and bring to life 11 key gardens across England.  Our gardens illustrate the depth of horticultural history from across the centuries, from the Elizabethan garden at Kenilworth Castle through to the 1930’s gardens at Eltham Place, and vary in size from Down House, the home of Charles Darwin and his garden of international significance, to the magnificent Osborne House, Queen Victoria’s palatial holiday home on the Isle of Wight.

Career paths

A passion for gardens and people is essential as our gardens provide the focal point of many of our visitors seeking to understand both the history as well as our future plans. You could join us within a number of different roles from Trainee or Gardener through to a Head Gardener or Gardens Advisor. Each site will offer a unique starting point from where you can shape a career that aligns with your horticultural skills and personal interests.
