An excellent opportunity has arisen for a head gardener to join a small team at a historic private garden in Holland Park.
We are seeking a motivated, considerate, experienced gardener who possesses the skill to lead the team through the seasons in tending this beautiful garden. We encourage applications from those who either have experience in the head gardener’s role or have suitable experience to step up to the role. Some experience of working in a private garden previously would be beneficial as this role requires discretion and flexibility.
The large walled garden has ancient trees, fruit trees, bulb studded wildflower meadows and mown lawns and paths. There is a glasshouse where more tender plants are grown. The traditional mixed flower borders with trained roses and climbers are being renovated to include bedding pockets for seasonal displays, bulb layers and successional planting combinations. The current gardeners are raising many plants in house and using propagation techniques. The head gardener will be expected to build on this, and to develop the planting further with assistance from our garden advisor.
We are looking for a head gardener who brings to the role an inspiring enthusiasm for the place and the style of gardening, and can demonstrate a keen interest in promoting organic gardening and biodiversity within an urban environment. Experience of managing perennial native wild flower meadows would be desirable, along with confidence in using the machinery to cut and manage the meadows and to mow the lawns.
The job demands a hands on approach to leadership as the team is small. The head gardener will be responsible for organising contractors to work in the garden as needed, and should be able to ensure safe working for the team and put in place proper risk assessments.
