Job Summary

Marchmont House is a bold, Grade A listed Palladian mansion, originally constructed in 1750 and extensively enlarged in the early 1900s by the eminent Scottish architect Sir Robert Lorimer for the McEwen family. During the second decade of the 2000’s the House was renovated by the current owners and won the Historic Houses/ Sotheby’s Award for the renovation in 2018. 

Under the direction of the Head Gardener and part of a team of 3 full time gardeners and a garden volunteer, you will be responsible for the maintenance and development of the gardens at Marchmont House.

The garden currently comprises a Walled Garden, Herbaceous and shrub borders, Glasshouses, Japanese garden, Vegetable Garden, lawns, woodland walk, wildflower meadows and Garden Nursery. Other elements of the garden will be added as it develops.

The postholder will be required to work as a team and individually using their own initiative when required. They will also be required to assist and support other members of the Marchmont House Team when needed.

As part of their duties, the post holder will be expected to assist with regular out of hours glasshouse work including evening and weekends and be involved with the running of occasional weekend events

Responsibilities and Duties include

  • Mowing, edging and any General turf maintenance required
  • Weeding and general border Maintenance
  • Watering
  • Propagation
  • Glasshouse Maintenance and care
  • Upkeep of Vegetable Garden
  • Spraying
  • Pruning
  • Strimming
  • Leaf clearing
  • Hedge cutting
  • Planting 
  • Basic Tool and machinery maintenance
  • Giving guidance to volunteer gardeners
  • Any other relevant duties as directed by the Head Gardener

Qualifications and skills

Candidates should:

  • Hold or be willing to work towards a Nationally recognised Horticultural qualification
  • Have a minimum of 2 years practical horticultural experience
  • Have or be willing to work towards relevant certificates of competence including PA1/PA6, PASMA, Basic Chainsaw etc
  • Hold a full, current uk driving license
  • Have a good knowledge of plants and horticultural concepts and practices
  • Have a good level of physical fitness and be willing to work outdoors in all weather
  • Be able to work using their own initiative 
  • Have an eye for detail and work to a high standard
  • Have excellent communication skills and work well as part of a team
  • Have an understanding of safe working practice
  • Have a passion and enthusiasm for plants and gardens
