About the post

Newnham College wishes to recruit a talented, experienced gardener to join the College’s Gardening team as Head Gardener. Working with the team and the College’s Garden Committee, this post is to build on the solid work undertaken in recent years and to help inspire, develop and implement plans for the future.  The College is the proud owner of 18 acres of beautiful, landscaped gardens, playing fields and outdoor public spaces in an exceptional environment. A well-used and much-loved asset of the College’s amenities a main impetus of this post will be to translate plans into reality, working sustainably and within a commitment to increasing bio-diversity.

The annual salary for this post is paid at point 42 on the University’s single salary spine, currently £34,304.  Working hours are 37.5 hours per week, but it is expected that the post-holder will work the hours required for the successful running of the department. The College offers other benefits, including 33 days a year holiday, (inclusive of bank holidays), free lunches and parking (where available) when working, use of the College gym and the post is pensionable under the College’s attractive contributory pension scheme with a current employer contribution rate of 21.6%. 

About you

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate substantial, practical experience of working in either horticulture or landscaping at a managerial level. Possessing a recognised qualification in Horticulture at level 3 or equivalent, they will be a knowledgeable plantsman or woman, be aware of and have qualifications in the correct use of garden machinery and chemicals and have the ability to develop the team to achieve departmental objectives. You will be willing to work alongside your team on the entire range of work in the gardens as well as with the College Committee overseeing the direction, preservation and development of this important area of the College.

The Garden team comprises a full-time Senior Gardener, 4 further full-time Gardeners and a part-time Gardener.
