Head of Gardens Lismore Castle

About us

Lismore Castle has been the Irish home of the family of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire since 1753. Lord and Lady Burlington, the Duke and Duchess’ son and daughter-in –law, currently lead the Devonshire Family’s interest in the Estate. The Castle is situated above the River Blackwater in the Heritage town of Lismore, County Waterford.   The garden has been an inspiration to writers and artists for centuries and it is said to be the oldest continually cultivated garden in Ireland.

Lismore’s rich and varied history is reflected in its gardens, and as Head Gardener, this is a unique opportunity for you to write the next chapter of that history.

Surrounded by ancient defensive walls and turrets, the garden covers approximately ten acres, incorporating:

·       Formal parterres, horticultural beds, orchard, fruit cage, lawns, wild meadow and mature trees

·       A spring garden featuring camellias, rhododendrons, and magnolias

·       A kitchen garden that provides vegetables, soft fruit and cut flowers for the Castle year round

·       A recently restored original Paxton Vinery

·       Polytunnels for plant propagation and plant production for sale to visitors

·       A  proximity to Ireland’s Southern coast ensuring a comparatively mild climate in winter and superb growing conditions.

About You

The garden is beautifully presented and with your strong horticultural experience, knowledge, passion, imagination and aesthetic flair, you will ensure the garden’s reputation is not only maintained but also enhanced.

We aim to be ‘always improving’, and as such you will work with the General Manager and Lord and Lady Burlington to achieve their vision for the garden. Current ambitions include continually innovating and increasing our commercial offering, for which a commercial understanding or background will be beneficial.

You will inherit a strong and valued existing team and will have the scope to grow this to five members, for which you will need previous management experience and be willing to take responsibility for organising rotas, training and development, performance management and recruitment.

What we offer

We can offer you the opportunity to work in the beautiful surroundings of the Lismore and Careysville Estates in County Waterford, Ireland.   We also offer a competitive salary and annual leave, housing and a contribution towards relocation fees (if appropriate), pension scheme, employee assistance programme and to work with colleagues across the wider Devonshire Group, including the Chatsworth and Bolton Abbey Estates in the UK.

Our core values include “Being Inclusive” and we particularly welcome applications from disabled and Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) candidates who are currently under-represented. We also welcome applicants from the LGBTQ+ community. Flexible ways of working will always be considered.
