What it's like to work here
Plas yn Rhiw is a small manor house surrounded by ornamental gardens and broadleaf woodland with sweeping views of Cardigan Bay. You will work alongside the senior gardener and volunteers at Plas yn Rhiw garden and surrounding woodland, as well as Sarn y Plas, home of renowned poet R.S.Thomas and his artist wife, Mildred Eldridge. This small, characterful property is loved by many and enjoyed by thousands of visitors each year; therefore we are looking for an engaging person with a can-do attitude who enjoys interacting with people.

Plasty bychan wedi’i amgylchynu gan erddi addurnol a choetir llydanddail yw Plas yn Rhiw ac fe geir golygfeydd ysblennydd o Fae Ceredigion oddi yno. Byddwch yn cydweithio â’r prif arddwr a gwirfoddolwyr yng ngardd Plas yn Rhiw a’r coetir o’i amgylch, ac yn Sarn y Plas, a fu’n gartref i’r bardd R.S.Thomas a’i wraig, yr arlunydd Mildred Eldridge. Mae llu o bobl wrth eu bodd â’r plasty bychan, llawn cymeriad, a daw miloedd o ymwelwyr i fwynhau’r profiad yn flynyddol; felly, rydym yn chwilio am rywun cyfeillgar a brwd sy’n mwynhau siarad hefo pobl.

What you'll be doing
As a hands-on gardener, you’ll assist in making sure that the gardens are maintained to a high standard. You’ll be passionate, enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the varied plants within the garden. This role will include a range of practical horticultural tasks to develop, enhance and conserve the garden and contribute to the delivery of projects. Tasks will include general maintenance of the garden, such as mulching, pruning, leaf clearing and weeding. You’ll support with the planting and maintenance of trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants, ensuring the highest standards are maintained and healthy plants are available for our visitors to enjoy. You’ll be helping to cut the hedges, mow lawns and undertake woodland management work.

Although your role will be focused around the upkeep of the garden, you will also occasionally be deputising for the Senior Gardener in their absence. This may mean supervising volunteers, attending meetings, giving talks and tours and assisting with events. You will be confident to answer questions about the garden and plants and proactively engage with visitors on a daily basis.

A chithau’n Arddwr wrth eich gwaith, byddwch yn helpu i sicrhau bod y gerddi’n cael eu cynnal i safon uchel. Byddwch yn angerddol, yn llawn brwdfrydedd ac yn wybodus am y gwahanol blanhigion sydd yn y gerddi. Bydd y gwaith yn cynnwys nifer o dasgau garddwriaethol ymarferol i ddatblygu, gwella a gwarchod yr ardd a byddwch yn cyfrannu at nifer o brosiectau. Bydd tasgau yn cynnwys gwaith tirlunio caled a meddal a gwaith cynnal a chadw cyffredinol yn yr ardd fel taenu tomwellt, tocio, clirio dail a chwynnu.  Byddwch yn helpu i blannu a chynnal coed, llwyni a phlanhigion blodeuol, gan sicrhau bod y gwaith yn cyrraedd y safonau uchaf a bod planhigion iach ar gael i’n hymwelwyr eu mwyhau. Byddwch yn helpu i dorri cloddiau, torri gwellt a gwneud gwaith rheoli’r coetir.

Er y byddwch yn canolbwyntio ar ofalu am yr ardd, o bryd i'w gilydd mi fyddwch yn dirprwyo dros y Prif Arddwr yn ei absenoldeb. Gall hyn olygu goruchwylio gwirfoddolwyr, mynd i gyfarfodydd, rhoi sgyrsiau, arwain teithiau, a chynorthwyo hefo digwyddiadau. Byddwch yn gallu ateb cwestiynau am yr ardd a’r planhigion yn hyderus o ddydd i ddydd ac yn gallu ymgysylltu yn bositif hefo ymwelwyr yn ddyddiol.

Company

There's no other organisation like the National Trust. No other organisation that brings such an amazing variety of places and spaces to life.

We are a charity founded in 1895 by Octavia Hill, Sir Robert Hunter and Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley, three people who saw the importance of our nation’s heritage and open spaces, and wanted to protect them for everyone to enjoy. More than a century after we were founded, our values are still at the heart of everything we do. And we do a lot more than you might think.

We welcome some 22.5 million visitors, from all ages and backgrounds, every year. We care for historic houses, gardens, mills, forests, castles, miles of coastline, islands, holiday cottages, pubs and inns, whole villages and even a goldmine. We also run a huge retail chain, a multi-million pound food and beverage business and much, much more. And we do all of this so that everyone can enjoy and make the most of the green spaces and beautiful places that England, Wales and Northern Ireland has to offer.

The National Trust is described by its employee gardeners as “dynamic, supportive, inquisitive and fun”, where its beautiful places “lift your spirits naturally” and “somewhere you can expand new skills”. The organisation is currently recruiting for a number of gardening roles.
