Experienced Head Gardener (and garden team) required.

The Head Gardener will establish and then lead their team to create a significant private garden being designed for the garden owners by Tom Stuart-Smith.

The owners are initiating a significant horticultural development that will create a beautiful garden and landscape with uninterrupted views across the north Staffordshire countryside.

Tom Stuart-Smith is supporting the owners to revive and renew their Tudor gothic style house and large estate with mature gardens. The gardens include the faded remains of a Grade II-listed orangery, pergola, lily pond, historic rock garden, rose garden, woodland, parkland, meadows and wild areas.

The owners aim to be self-sufficient in vegetables, fruit, and flowers. In addition to a large, traditional productive garden to be run along organic principals, the owner is exploring innovative solutions which might include hydroponics and aquaponic production. Producing wonderful compost will be key to supporting the garden and will support us to work in ways that best support the environment.

As we are creating our team from scratch, we have a relatively open mind to how the ultimate structure might look to achieve a highly collaborative and professional team.

We seek an experienced, hands-on Head Gardener, possibly a specialist, possibly a generalist supported by the specialist skills required. The Head Gardener will oversee the general maintenance and presentation of the wider estate, however agricultural and tenancy matters are managed by a land agent.

The Head Gardener will initially establish a team of 4 gardeners which will include a production specialist, plant specialist, gardener, and an estate maintenance person.

Salary will reflect the Professional Gardeners Guild salary guidelines for 2022. Accommodation may be available on the estate.
