Tom Stuart-Smith Ltd is an established landscape design practice based in rural Hertfordshire. We are looking for a gardener with excellent horticultural knowledge and good communication skills to run an innovative, not-for-profit gardening project with community involvement in a new garden at the Orchard, Serge Hill, near St Albans.
The Serge Hill Project for Gardening, Creativity and Health is developing a garden in an orchard at Serge Hill. This initiative will offer resources to local schools and charities as well as local residents and paying groups who want to develop their gardening knowledge and skills. It will also develop a wider programme of creative activities related to gardening and conservation. More information about the project can be found here: www.tomstuartsmith.co.uk/community
A large proportion of the Orchard site is made up of the Plant Library, a unique educational resource for anyone interested in plants and planting design: whether they be visiting students of horticulture, gardeners, garden designers, school children, or our own studio design team. Early developments in the garden have been completed but there is lots more to do. There is also a small nursery with an equipped polytunnel and secure plant standing out ground and no-dig vegetable plots.
We are also collaborating with the charity Sunnyside Rural Trust to create a unit on site where they will propagate plants for growing on at their other sites for sale to retail and trade customers including our design projects. We see this as a great way of supporting an excellent charity and having access to high quality varieties of plant that we like to use and have difficulty sourcing.
The Orchard building is at the centre of the garden and is currently under construction, to be completed in 2022. It will function as a base as well as an education and resource centre.
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced gardener who is passionate about the health benefits of gardening.
