An excellent and rare opportunity has arisen for an experienced and knowledgeable horticulturist to join the team who manage the gardens of Wiston House, a 16th Century Grade 1 Listed manor in the South Downs National Park. The Gardens Team are also involved in other areas of Wiston Estate, such as managing the planters, trees and beds around Chalk Restaurant and Wiston Estate Winery. Based in the heart of the West Sussex, Wiston House is a central part of the wider Wiston Estate, and while this role will be based in the gardens, it will adhere to the estate’s wider principles and purpose – to foster a rural meeting place where people, nature and enterprises coexist and flourish. The estate believes strongly in investing in people, maximising our resources, championing fresh thinking, and extending a generous welcome to all who come to the estate.

The gardens are comprised of formal borders and lawns around the main house, propagation glasshouse, display conservatory, ponds, herbaceous borders, box parterre, cut flower garden, orchards, shrub borders, woodland areas, large lawns and parkland. The gardens are managed organically where possible with a strong focus on sustainability. Wiston House itself is leased to Wilton Park, an executive agency of the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Leading figures in politics, diplomacy, business and academia are invited to gather together to discuss issues affecting the world today. As such, successful candidates will play a vital role in cultivating an environment that is conducive to open, constructive dialogue.

The ideal candidate will possess suitable academic and industrial horticultural qualifications and will have experience in a garden of a similar size with a real passion for horticulture. Applicants must be competent with a wide range of garden machinery with a good level of horticultural knowledge. Good level of fitness and happy to be working outdoors in all weathers. Driving license, chainsaw and PA1 & PA6 would be an advantage but not essential.
