Job Description

A highly experienced Head Gardener with an accredited horticultural qualification (Level 3 or above) is sought to play a leading role on a stunning and historic 200-acre private estate in Ascot, Berkshire.

This position would suit a proactive, committed, and hands-on Head Gardener who has demonstrable experience of working within a large estate team. Expertise in garden design, woodland management, project procurement, safe working practices, and garden machinery and licensing are essential.

The Head Gardener will lead and manage a committed team of 10, to ensure that the gardens and wider estate are maintained to the highest possible standards. The ability to motivate and support the development of the existing team is highly desirable. Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Head Gardener will be required to manage external contractors and to work alongside landscape architects where necessary. As Head Gardener you will oversee the garden budget, maintenance schedules, and seasonal planting plans.

The Head Gardener will be expected to brief the Principal on garden projects on a regular basis, so discretion and good communication skills are necessary.

The estate encompasses approximately 60-acres of Grade I listed gardens, grass tennis courts, an outdoor swimming pool, rose garden, potager, large greenhouse and woodland glade. In addition to the main estate, the Head Gardener will also be responsible for overseeing the management of small ornamental gardens at the Principal’s London townhouse.

The Head Gardener will be joining the Estate at an exciting time, as they will have the opportunity to play a key role in the development and implementation of a garden legacy project. This is a rare opportunity for a talented gardener to take a significant step in their career and to utilise their varied skillset.

Candidates must have proven management experience, preferably working in both a private and public garden, and hold a full UK driving licence.
