Playground Manager
Playground Inspectors (x2)

Organisation: Cardiff Council
Working hours: Full time (37 hours/week)
Playground Manager – £29,577 - £33,782
Playground Inspectors – £21,748 - £25,481
Appointment type: Permanent

Cardiff’s parks and green spaces provide a wealth of facilities for children and young people to enjoy outdoor activity. Cardiff Council is committed to providing high quality outdoor play provision and an exciting opportunity now exists for individuals to join our parks team to pursue a career in parks / playground management.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the city’s 150+ playgrounds, skate parks, multi-use games areas and other teen facilities have seen levels of use not previously experienced and these new roles have been created to establish a small, dedicated team to maintain, manage and plan future provision for children’s play. The new post holders will also be supported by a Playground Technical Support Supervisor, Playground Operative and Playground Apprentice.

The Playground Manager will direct the workload of the Playground team and be responsible for allocation of the annual playground revenue budget, to include preparation of reports and recommendations on current and future spending priorities. They will work closely with the Parks based design team to deliver cost effective and sustainable refurbishments of existing playgrounds as part of the Council’s capital programme.

Ideally, they will need to have practical experience as a playground inspector or manager and a good understanding of the legislative and risk management environment that impacts on fixed equipment play provision. However, support will be given for the right candidate to attain the necessary level of competence in these areas.

The Playground Inspectors will be responsible for the inspection, basic repair and servicing of equipment, to provide safe, clean and attractive play areas, skate parks, outdoor adult fitness areas and multi-use games areas throughout the city. They will need to be RPII qualified as a Playground Inspector or be willing to undertake training to achieve this within 3 months of commencing work. They will also need an understanding of the legislative and risk management environment that impacts on children’s fixed equipment play provision.

For both posts, applicants will need to be flexible and adaptable, with an eye for detail. The ability to use Microsoft Office applications is required. Experience of the use of Playsafe asset management software or similar, would also be beneficial.

Above all, all members of our new team will have a “can-do” attitude and be able toinitiate and prioritise their own work to react to the demands of the service. Owing to the nature of the role, the post-holders may occasionally be required to attend sites outside of normal working hours for which appropriate remuneration will be payable.

For an informal discussion about this role please contact Rosie James, Strategy and Development Manager on 07972 775419.
This post is suitable for job share.

We welcome applications in both English and Welsh.
