Head Grower/Production manager

About our business

Pentland plants is a successful family business spanning nearly 100 years. We root and grow over 50 million plants each year and achieving the highest quality using appropriate chemicals and other methods is essential.

We supply plug plants to growers throughout the UK and finished plants to Scotland and the north of England . We also grow for many of the parks departments in the UK and NI. The candidate will work closely with the family directors and contribute to the future decision making of the company, bringing new ideas and have the ability to act on them.

You will be responsible for the growing and keeping cultural records of all the various crops including bedding plants, perennials and poinsettia. We also have a garden centre for which our nursery grows the bulk of the bedding and perennial plants and a busy cafe. We heat the nursery and garden centre using biomass wood chip having installed two biomass boilers over 10 years ago

In this role, you will be responsible for the growing operation over 5 acres of glass and poly tunnels. You will be looking at production planning, growing from seeds and cuttings through to plugs and finished plants. Crop planning, implementation, Crop walking, irrigation, and pest and disease monitoring will all fall into your remit.

You will be responsible for managing and training a team of 25- 50 people depending on the season , to ensure the highest quality stock is consistently being grown.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who has previous experience at a high level in a commercial nursery environment and has a passion for horticulture. Ideally, you will have worked in a management position in the past

Most of our processes are computer controlled, from environmental computers to bespoke software for accurate plug production and dispatch so a good IT knowledge is essential.

You should have the relevant qualifications , training and experience in commercial greenhouse production. Ideally with knowledge of growing bedding plant, perennial and poinsettias as well as an understanding of growing from seed and propagating cutting material. Knowledge of the process of optimum germination techniques is essential likewise for rooting a diverse range of ornamental bedding and basket plants.

You must be able to manage and build a team whilst improving quality and running the. Business more efficiently

Technical grower

This person will assist the head grower And the directors and must have experience in all aspects of similar crop production and a good knowledge of composts, fertilisers, watering and pests and diseases.

The job involves constantly monitoring our crops and growing them to the highest quality.
