Assistant Gardener/Estate Worker

An exciting opportunity for an Assistant Gardener/Estate Worker on a historically famous family run 300 acre rural Estate in the vicinity of Hungerford.

We are seeking enthusiastic candidates with a positive can-do attitude who take pride in their work.

Reporting to the Head Gardener you will be part of the small team maintaining the highest Horticultural and Estate standards.

What this job entails

Key duties will include:

  • Generally, to assist with the day to day maintenance and development of an established 4 to 5 acre flower garden and vegetable/fruit gardens, along with wider Estate tasks.
  • Cutting and maintaining lawns and grass using a variety of machines and applying seasonal sprays and fertilisers.
  • Preparing, planting and maintaining a walled vegetable garden as well as small orchard and soft fruit cages.
  • Assisting in the planting, weeding, watering and pruning within the flower garden.
  • Basic machinery/tool maintenance.
  • Wider Estate management including topping, rolling, fencing and cutting up fallen trees.

​Candidate Requirements

  • RHS Level 2 in Horticulture - or equivalent.
  • Some practical gardening and horticultural experience.
  • Competence with normal garden machinery as well as familiarity with using farm machinery, including tractor and telehandler.
  • Candidates with some experience in Game Keeping and an interest with helping run the Estate's private pheasant shoot are encouraged to apply.
  • To be happy to work on their own or together with the Head Gardener or interchangeably.
  • Understand the importance of maintaining a clean and safe working environment.

Salary and Conditions

  • Salary commensurate with experience.
  • Separate accommodation provided.
  • Preferred starting date 1st March 2022.
  • 6 month probationary period.
  • Normal working hours - 8am to 4pm.
  • 28 days holiday, plus bank holidays.
