Sole / Head Gardener with assistance.required for Shirburn Lodge Estate, South Oxfordshire

A small country estate set within the Chilterns AONB featuring established woodland, parkland, meadows, formal lawns, herbaceous borders and an ornamental walled garden.  A small vegetable garden, cut flower garden and soft fruit are also incorporated alongside a glasshouse and cold frames.

The garden, hard and soft landscaping have all been designed by Tom Stuart-Smith,

and strongly relate to both the Georgian and contemporary elements of the country house. The owners have created an environment which responds to the past with modernity in style and substance.  The planting includes many species of pollinators to encourage insect life, the adoption of “natural” methods of management where possible and current plans to evolve wildflower meadows.

The design and extensive planting has resulted in an exceptional garden that sets a high standard for garden maintenance and presentation.  The most complex planting is set within the historic walled garden; a semi-formal structure of soft and naturalistic perennial planting, intersected by sweeping grassed paths and punctuated with shrubs/trees that both interrupt and provide focus.  The garden provides seasonal interest throughout the year.

A full time apprentice gardener is employed; the Head Gardener is responsible for appropriate supervision and training.

Future development of the 23 acre landscape includes plans for further meadow planting, trees, productive vegetable garden and the horticultural evolution of a large woodland lined field.

Candidates should ideally be qualified to RHS level 3, or similar.

The salary reflects the PGG salary guidelines 2021 (accommodation is not provided).
