Job Details
MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB
As a Head Gardener you will be responsible for the high quality delivery of the grounds maintenance and services, ensuring that high horticulture standards are continued to be delivered across all of your areas of responsibility.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
General
- Undertake all routine and specialised gardening, focusing on best practice
- Maintain tools responsibly, including cleaning, oiling and sharpening as directed. Damaged or lost items to be reported to your supervisor
- Accept responsibility and work collaboratively to achieve results
- Communicate effectively, keep managers informed, and listen and ask questions to ensure understanding
- Be efficient and organised, working to company systems e.g. timesheets, work controls tick sheets, rotas
- Be reliable in your attendance at work and to follow company rules and procedures if absent from work for any reason
Team Management
- Responsible for the day to day leadership and output of designated gardening activities
- Act in a professional and confident manner
- Work collaboratively with your team to achieve results
- Delivery of toolbox talks and briefings to Gardener’s
Customer
- Create a positive impression with our customers and work to exceed their expectations, presenting a polite and responsible attitude at all times
- Focus on promoting the company wherever possible and feedback potential leads from sites and local press
- Dealing with the public in a respectful and efficient manner, answering questions relating to the site, noting and reporting any complaints to your supervisor
- Represent the company respectfully by wearing the correct corporate clothing, ensuring vehicles and machinery are professionally presented and that sites are kept clean and tidy
Productivity
- Take responsibility for delivering a quality service
- Display innovation and make suggestions for improvements that may lead to increased productivity
- Focus on utilising the most economic and effective work practices
Planning and Organising
- Completion of certain reports/documents and returned to the Contract Manager for review
- Be efficient and organised, focusing on following company procedures e.g. job tick sheets, time sheets and vehicle inspection sheets
Health & Safety
- It is the responsibility of the Head Gardener to ensure that all staff within their team are inducted properly
- Ensure that works carried out complies and focuses on the idverde Health & Safety and Environmental Policy
- Ensure integrity when reporting accidents, near misses and hazards
- Work areas to be assessed with integrity to ensure potential hazards are removed or adequate control measures are in place to implement a safer working environment
- Ensure that the full team are wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) responsibly for each task that requires it
- Work to risk assessments and COSHH assessments
Learning
- Discuss and review your work and job specification and display innovation by planning changes and improvements as appropriate
- Be suitably trained for all work tasks undertaken and taking training opportunities where relevant
- Demonstrate innovation by identifying opportunities and suggest alternative and more effective ways of carrying out tasks
Financial
- Take responsibility in avoiding wastage which will contribute to the company controlling costs
- Utilise the most economic and effective work practices
- Show innovation and make suggestions for improvements that may lead to increased productivity
- Take responsibility in the security of vehicles, machinery and materials
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
- Delivering the program on time or ahead of schedule
- Client satisfaction of the quality of work delivered
- Maintaining a consistent attendance record
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- A professional qualification in horticulture
- Demonstrable horticulture knowledge and experience
- Full, clean driving licence
- Extensive and applicable knowledge of Health and Safety legislation
- Experience of leading a team

- A passion and enthusiasm for horticulture
- Polite and professional attitude at all times
- Ability to motivate and lead staff
