Summary

Please note this role will form part of an opening rota which will include weekend and bank holiday working. The ability to speak Welsh is essential. 

Hours: 37.5 per week / full time

What it's like to work here

Plas yn Rhiw is a small manor house surrounded by ornamental gardens and broadleaf woodland with sweeping views of Cardigan Bay. You will manage the gardener and volunteers at Plas yn Rhiw garden and surrounding woodland, as well as three holiday cottage gardens on the wider estate and Sarn y Plas, home of renowned poet R.S.Thomas and his artist wife, Mildred Eldridge. This small, characterful property is loved by many and we are looking for an engaging person with a can-do attitude who enjoys working in a small team and a fast-paced working environment.

What you'll be doing

You’ll love working outdoors and understand that our gardens and grounds are as significant as our mansion houses, collections and our historical places. Our visitors tell us how much they enjoy the peace and tranquillity of our well-kept outdoor spaces, which makes your role vital in making sure our visitors have an amazing experience.

We don’t just need you to manage our beautiful gardens, although this is an important part of the role; we’d like you to help manage the team too. As the Senior Gardener in our team, we’d like you to lead by example, with exceptional gardening skills, but you’ll also understand how to manage the workload for this team, and deliver exceptional training to new staff and volunteers.

As a hands-on Senior Gardener, your role will include a range of practical horticultural tasks to enhance and conserve the garden and contribute to the delivery of projects. You’ll be responsible for making sure that the gardens are maintained to a high standard including hard and soft landscaping, mulching, pruning, leaf clearing and weeding. You’ll deliver the planting and maintenance of trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants, ensuring the highest standards are maintained and healthy plants are available for our visitors to enjoy. You’ll also be undertaking woodland management work. You’ll be passionate, and knowledgeable about the varied plants within the garden and enthusiastic about sharing the unique spirit of Plas Rhiw with visitors. This will include interacting with visitors on a daily basis and planning and delivering outdoor engagement opportunities such as guided tours or family events.

Who we're looking for

To be successful in this role you should be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Significant practical experience in horticulture supported by relevant qualifications
  • Have supervisory experience from a similar role
  • Excellent knowledge of plants
  • Competent with the use and maintenance of garden machinery including chainsaws, tractors, hedge trimmers, pedestrian and ride on mowers
  • Knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation and practice
