Q) Tell us a bit about Rowan Landscapes and the work it does

Rowan Landscapes is an independent business that specialises in providing high quality gardening services to schools, offices, businesses and residential clients all over London. It has been established for over 20 years, since 2003. It is a member of BALI (the British Association of Landscape Industries) and is listed as an accredited contractor. Furthermore, it has won 3 x BALI awards to date.

Q) What’s the culture like at Rowan Landscapes? Do you socialise together out of work?

It is a small family owned business where trust, hard work, loyalty and professionalism are rewarded. There is no socialising outside of work as a general rule.

Q) What’s the progression like for the role of Gardener

No formal progression until the business grows, but very good working conditions and plenty of scope for independent working/freedom to manage each working day.

Q) Will there be opportunities for further training for the candidate selected?

Could be - in the past there have been forest school training and chainsaw training for established staff.

Q) The Gardener hired will have the opportunity to work on some wonderfully landscaped big gardens. Are these private ones? Have you got an example of one or two that they’ll be working on?

The majority of work is within primary schools in London, but 1 or 2 days a week a whole day is spent working on a high-end residential garden.

Will the gardener be working alone or in a pair etc?

A combination of both - for the first few months working in a pair but once familiar with all the schools and other sites there will be a substantial part of the week working alone. Generally 2 or 3 days alone and 2 days working with another gardener but it depends on the time of year/season.

Q) Rowan Landscapes is based near London Zoo and Regent’s Park. But whereabouts are the gardens that the gardener will be working on? All over London or in a specific area?

The majority of work is in and around South London, particularly around Lambeth and Southwark. All the school work is all based on site, so the gardener will be working from a different site each day. Each site is set up with tools and machinery.

Q) Are there any other benefits apart from salary that candidates can expect?

20 days holiday plus 8 x bank holidays and full time 40 hours per week permanent work through out the year.

Q) What are the top three traits you’re looking for? E.g. hard-working, team player

Honest Hard-working and Trustworthy

Q) Can the candidate expect regular hours?

This is a full time 40 hours per week permanent position

Q) Who would be your ideal candidate?

We are looking for a full Time experienced gardener with a driving license. It would be desirable but not mandatory for them to have driven a van similar to a ford transit for the day to day that we do here.
