Mid Devon District Council has an opening for an experienced Arboricultural Officer to join the team in our busy Planning team and our Property Services area. Mid Devon is an attractive place to work and we have ambitious plans for a more sustainable future. Green infrastructure and trees form an important component to the delivery of future sustainable development. The Arboricultural Officer post plays an important role in how that development is shaped and how the Council’s Arboricultural assets are managed.

Working closely with colleagues in the Development Management and Property Services you will provide professional arboricultural advice on planning applications and tree works applications/notices, assist in developing policy and contribute to effective enforcement.  You will hold a National Diploma in Arboriculture Level 4 or an arboricultural /forestry qualification or equivalent demonstrable experience.  You should also have knowledge of Town and Country Planning Legislation and British Standards in relation to trees, development and landscaping matters.

Demonstrable knowledge of tree husbandry, arboricultural management techniques with significant experience and the ability to undertake tree inspections and able to prioritise and plan a mixed workload including the preparation, administration and enforcement of Tree Preservation Orders, processing of tree works applications and notices and making best use of personal resources to achieve performance objectives. The ability to travel around the district is essential for this post.

The successful candidate will be required to monitor the work undertaken by the arboriculture contractors to ensure compliance with contract specification, quality assurance and compliance with relevant legislation.  To maintain high standards of customer service, responding to enquiries from residents, elected members, other agencies within the agreed service standards.

To provide professional, technical advice to Officers and Members of the Council providing written reports and attending meetings as required in relation to the responsibilities of the post and establish positive relationships. 

You will have excellent organisational and time management skills to deliver results as the role is split between two service areas, plus excellent communication skills which you can adapt as appropriate to suit a variety of audiences.

An understanding of Biodiversity Net Gain, Woodland Carbon Code & Environmental Land Management Scheme requirements, Knowledge of Natural England and Environment Agency policies and procedures would be advantageous.
