Job Details

Head Gardener - Horatio’s Garden – Welsh Spinal Cord Rehabilitation Centre, Llandough Hospital.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, experienced head gardener for a prestigious role in a new Sarah Price designed hospital garden project at Cardiff’s only spinal injury centre. You will be working closely with renowned garden designer and Chelsea gold medal winning Sarah Price and her team, to plant and establish the new garden which is due to open in October. The project has had widespread publicity throughout the fundraising and development and will trail blaze the benefits of gardens and health.

Horatio’s Garden is a national charity creating and nurturing beautifully designed gardens in NHS’s spinal injury centres. The head gardener will be responsible for leading the project and caring for the garden and the patients who use it. You will collaborate with the rehabilitation centre’s staff, to create a vibrant sanctuary which meets the needs of the charities beneficiaries.

The garden is a contemporary masterpiece with two interconnected gardens – one for patients with spinal injuries and the other for patients with brain injuries. A large garden room designed by renowned architects 6A will give patients a warm sheltered place to enjoy the garden in all weather.

The fully accessible garden will echo gardens found in the Welsh landscape with a bright flower garden, an orchard, a moss garden, wildflower garden and a sunny terraced area.

There is a large accessible glasshouse, an area of raised beds for patients to get involved with gardening and a warm Head Gardeners office looking out over the garden.

The Head Gardener will join a team of five other dedicated Head Gardeners across the charity’s existing projects. They will work with a part-time garden administrator and a team of volunteers to nurture the beautiful space for patients and their visitors. Sarah Price will be closely involved as the garden grows, visiting regularly and offering advice.

You will be responsible for delivering a therapeutic gardening programme as well as arts activities for patients in the garden, supported by the charity’s Arts Co-ordinator. With the garden administrator you will also arrange social events for patients and their families in co-ordination with the rehabilitation centre’s team.

The role is a fantastic opportunity for a confident gardener with an interest in gardens and wellbeing and a passion for people as well as plants. We welcome informal enquiries.

The post is available in mid-August to coincide with planting the garden. The role is flexible for 4-5 days per week. Salary depending on experience approx. £30,000- £31,000 FTE.

The project is located at the Welsh Spinal Cord Rehabilitation Centre, Llandough Hospital, Cardiff CF64 2XX

Company

Horatio’s Garden is a national charity creating and nurturing beautiful gardens in NHS spinal injury centres to support everyone affected by spinal injury. We grow thriving communities to support patients, their families and friends facing long stays in NHS hospitals.

Leading landscape designers create these stunning sanctuaries, working in collaboration with prominent architects to design garden rooms ensuring the space can be used all year round. The gardens become an integral part of people’s lives throughout their time in hospital.

The charity is named after Horatio Chapple, a volunteer who had the original idea of creating a garden away from the wards for patients and their families.

Spinal cord injuries are traumatic, life-changing events. Patients often have little or no access to the outside world during their hospital stay. However, research shows that being in contact with a natural environment contributes to an improved sense of wellbeing, which can have a positive impact on patient rehabilitation.
