Job Details

Senior Gardener
Belsay Hall & Castle
Two years fixed term contract

Would you like to use your passion and creativity to nurture one of the country's most prestigious gardens and inspire visitors from across the world? Then join us as Senior Gardener at Belsay Hall, Castle & Gardens, brimming with historic character and exciting gardening opportunities, offers a remarkable setting in which to take the next step in your career.

Belsay Hall and Castle is a key property within the English Heritage portfolio and attracts around 70,000 visitors each year. Belsay Hall has an exceptional garden, with a range of surviving garden layouts dating back to the high 'Picturesque period' of the nineteenth century.

As part of our National Lottery Heritage Fund-funded 'Belsay Awakes' Project, we are seeking someone to take on the role of Senior Gardener. You would be responsible to the Head Gardener for garden maintenance, but have special responsibility for implementing an extensive restoration project on the site, working with a garden designer and English Heritage colleagues.

Belsay Awakes is a project supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund which will restore the gardens, help accessibility on site, and create major opportunities for visitors and stakeholders at Belsay Hall and Castle. This role is specifically tailored to this project and its specialist needs in 'people development' for trainees and volunteers.

Working with the Head Gardener and Gardens Project Supervisor, the Senior Gardener will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the garden elements of the Belsay Awakes project. You will also be responsible for maintenance and development of all garden areas, for helping to supervise trainees, volunteers and contractors, and for maintenance of equipment, health and safety and risk assessments.

We're looking for someone with high-quality garden experience and the specialist skills required for this particular site; excellent plant knowledge and horticultural skills; and a talent for leadership. You'll know how to ensure visitors enjoy their day out - from sharing your gardening knowledge, to ensuring their health and safety. Being able to ensure smooth running of weekly job rotas and input into the seasonal work plans are also a must for this busy and dynamic role.

We strive to be an inclusive employer and are always looking for people who reflect the diversity of the country today, to help us make it more relevant to the diversity of the people, communities and places we serve. We continually look for new ways to promote the past in a way that is inclusive to all and that celebrates the cultural diversity of England's heritage.

From remote sites to inner city monuments, from regional teams to our Head Office, the diversity of our teams is critical to making sure our shared heritage is inclusive, exciting and accessible.

You'll find it's a workplace like no other - taking you behind the scenes of these extraordinary sites and supporting you to share your ideas, inspire others and make a difference.

By joining us, you'll enjoy the rewards of a great team environment in inspiring locations, helping to make our site a wonderful place to visit. You'll also be joining our charity, which through our 400+ historic monuments, buildings and sites, brings the story of England to life for over 10 million visitors each year. We offer a competitive benefits package including a generous pension, 25 days leave a year and free entry to all English Heritage properties for you, another adult and up to 6 children (under the age of 19).
