GARDENER & CARETAKER

Minty Project Management is seeking an enthusiastic Gardener and Caretaker to work at a privately-owned Artist Studio complex in Peckham. The Studio is situated on a ¾ acre plot with gardens to the front and rear. The main purpose of the role is to manage and maintain the gardens to a high standard as well as provide general up-keep and maintenance to other areas of the site and building. The ideal candidate must be proactive in their approach to working with an ability to manage and prioritise workloads effectively. This is a new role within the company that offers scope to develop and expand over time. It requires a motivated individual with a keen eye for detail and a passion for gardening and working outdoors. The role also has the potential to include some creativity through designing new planting schemes under the guidance and wishes of the owner, propagation and overall contribution to the development of the gardens to the highest possible standards. 

Gardener - main duties and tasks:

  • Manage and maintain the studio gardens to a very high standard
  • Ensure that the owner’s aesthetic vision is achieved at all times
  • Plant, shrub and tree care (pruning, weeding and insect control)
  • Pond maintenance
  • Paving & wood care (pressure-washing, algaecide treatment, cleaning, sealing, oiling)
  • Weed control
  • Mulching
  • Planting and cut flower cultivation
  • Understanding and executing seasonal tasks within the garden
  • Installing Spring, Summer and Winter bedding arrangements
  • Installing, operating and maintaining a water irrigation system
  • Operating and maintaining tools and machinery (hand tools, blower, lawn mowers, trimmers etc.)
  • Transportation and disposal of green waste

Caretaker - main duties and tasks:

  • To carry out light maintenance tasks as and when requested by the Operations team. This may include tasks such as painting and decorating, unblocking drains, fixing broken door handles, clearing gutters, cleaning outdoor areas, installing shelves etc.)
  • Ensure that all outdoor areas and fire escape routes are fit for purpose and clear of any obstacles
  • Adopt a holistic view of facilities maintenance across the site, creating and implementing a strategic plan of work in order to be able to prioritise and react to unplanned maintenance alongside other duties within the garden
  • Conduct risk assessments before carrying out any maintenance tasks to ensure they meet the required health and safety standards
  • Promoting Health and Safety awareness across the site 

Skills, qualifications and knowledge:

  • Current full UK Driving License  
  • RHS level 2 qualification in Horticulture desirable, or equivalent level of vocational experience
  • Minimum of two years full-time experience, training or equivalent in a gardening related role
  • Knowledge of a wide range of horticultural techniques covering a range of plant types desirable, but not essential
  • Knowledge of plant selection, floristry and nursery practices desirable
  • Physically fit and able  
  • Knowledge of health & safety and compliance requirements relevant to horticulture 
  • Competent in the use and maintenance of a wide range of horticultural machinery and tools, as well as an understanding and board compliance of health and safety procedures relating to the use of machinery and tools 
  • An ability to work autonomously and to take responsibility for set schedules 
  • An eagerness to learn and develop skills and knowledge 
  • Experience of record management and information systems 
  • Ability to occasionally assist with extra duties around the site, such as, preparing spaces for events and photoshoots

Salary: £30,000 - £36,000 (commensurate with experience)

Job type: Full time, 40 hours per week although job shares will be considered. (Benefits include 20 annual leave days plus bank holidays & company pension scheme).
