Green Spaces Officer

We are looking for a talented person to join our Natural Environment Team to assist in ensuring that parks and open spaces are provided on new developments that will have a positive impact on the people’s quality of life here in Basingstoke and Deane.

Basingstoke is a vibrant, growing town, located amongst the historic villages of North Hampshire, close to the picturesque South Downs National Park and the North Wessex Downs AONB. The borough is one of the most financially resilient local authorities and is also within easy reach of London by road and rail.

One of the team’s roles is to ensure that developers deliver parks and open spaces on new developments, an area of work where there is a new opportunity to join the team. So, have you got a creative mind that can find solutions to a range of sometimes historic issues? Do you enjoy reviewing information to get these solutions? Are you tenacious enough to pursue developers until they deliver on their obligations to a high standard? If this is you, then you could be just what we need to help make this role a success.

The post is for a fixed term of until March 2023 and will be an excellent opportunity for you to develop your career. The post include the following benefits;-

· Salary between £30,451 - £33,782
· 37 hour week
· Flexi-time
· Generous leave entitlement
· Split home/office working pattern
· Town centre office located on the edge of an award-winning Victorian park
· Free parking
· Salary sacrifice scheme for lease cars
· Healthcare cash plan
· Pension scheme

You will be joining a bold and innovative organisation that has big ambitions – for the borough and for our staff. We do things differently here. We go beyond expectations to nurture and develop our communities and our colleagues as we shape an exciting future for the borough.

The Natural Environment Team is responsible for a wide range of projects within the natural environment from ensuring green spaces are delivered successfully by developers, designing and implementing new open spaces and play areas, improving biodiversity, managing council-owned trees and key parks within the borough. The team also contributes to planning policy development and providing expert advice on planning applications.

Ideally, we are looking for someone qualified to A Level (or equivalent) standard with a strong desire to develop their career within the natural environment. You will have a keen interest in the natural environment and an understanding of landscape design and horticulture, possibly with a relevant qualification. An understanding of the planning process will be useful, and you will have experience of interpreting plans and implementing landscape schemes in either a supervisory or hands on role.

Good communication skills are essential as is the ability to work on a number of different projects at the same time. While experience of working with housing developers and local agencies would be useful, what really matters is that you are genuinely enthusiastic about shaping exceptional landscapes and spaces that people will love using.

You will be working with colleagues and developers and will be required to monitor progress of green space provision on residential developments from installation through to completion and handover, ensuring compliance with approved plans and landscape specifications and overcoming any obstacles that arise in the process.

As part of a multi-disciplinary team, there will be the opportunity to work closely with colleagues involved in the projects, giving you the chance to share ideas and develop your knowledge.

Now’s your opportunity to take on a key role in the delivery of a range of innovative projects across the borough. So, bring your talents to this diverse role and be part of our dynamic growth story.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council offer a wide range of benefits, including a generous leave entitlement, access to discounts at nationwide retailers through our ‘B Rewarded’ discount site, flexible working, healthcare cash plan, pension scheme and much more.

The council signs up to the Disability Confident scheme (formerly known as the ‘Two Ticks’ scheme). If you have declared a disability on the application form we can guarantee you an interview if you meet the essential criteria for the job.
