Skilled Estate Gardener

Location

Salary
£21000 per annum + acommodation and bonus scheme
Closing date

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Skilled Gardener to join an established and prestigious country estate nestled in the heart of Ashdown Forest, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in East Sussex. The grounds and gardens within the 180-acre estate are Grade 2 listed and incorporate a large productive walled kitchen garden, orchard, state of the art glasshouses, formal terraces, lawns, extensive herbaceous borders, parkland, lakes, ponds, woodland and valuable Rhododendron and tree collections.

The skilled gardener, as part of an experienced team of 7 gardeners, will be mainly responsible for the management of the ornamental aspects of the soft landscaping across the grounds and gardens, such as herbaceous and mixed borders, seasonal bedding, glasshouse displays, ponds and cut flower production. Therefore, the position is particularly suited for an enthusiastic and knowledgeable plantsperson with ample experience in the cultivation and identification of ornamental plants, and a creative eye for design and planting combination. In addition, the skilled gardener will also be involved in all other aspects of the gardening and ground care operations, so experience and strong practical knowledge of a wider range of gardening and grounds care tasks is necessary, including operation of garden machinery and tractors.

Given the nature of the role, an adequate degree of physical fitness and willingness to work outdoors in all weathers is required. A team player, the successful applicant will bring dedication, professionalism and a strong work ethic. The position would be ideal for a driven and vocational horticulturalist looking for a fulfilling role in a magnificent horticultural setting with a friendly and motivating working atmosphere.

Horticultural qualifications and relevant gardening experience are essential for a successful application, as it is a full UK driving license. PA1 and PA6 spraying tickets would be very beneficial. The employer is committed to developing staff and the successful applicant will look forward to continual support and career development, training, pension and bonus schemes, and paid overtime. The applicant must be willing to occasionally work outside formal hours to facilitate additional support for the gardening operations during busy periods.

The salary offered with the position is £21000 p.a., 37 hours per week and 20 days of annual leave, exclusive of bank holidays. This is a live-in position which includes free accommodation on site in a comfortable 3-bedroom cottage with its own private garden. Dependents are welcome.
