This will be a split role working 3 days a week at Hatchlands Park and 2 days a week at Polesden Lacey.

What it's like to work here

A split role based at Hatchlands Park your time will be split 3 days here with some time and 2 at Polesden lacey (or equivalent of) we are forging good working partnership with the teams at Polesden.

Hatchlands Park  is open 365 days of the year. Leading a volunteer team carry out the maintenance and presentation of the garden which consists of a small parterre, informal shrub and bulb borders, a wildflower meadow, lawns, visitor and staff car parks. There is a small propagation area and pumpkin growing patch. You may also be required to assist in the care of our two donkeys Morris and Callum. The mansion nestles in 450 acres of beautiful Grade II listed Repton Parkland which includes a natural play area, woodland walks, mature and ancient trees, ponds and pasture.

As a key representative post, you will be expected to carry out 24hr 7day cover, working one in three weekends as part of a team of three responding to security and fire alarms in Hatchlands mansion, park and garden, Clandon park and store.

 Clandon Park has limited opening. You will occasionally assist the Gardener and volunteer team presenting 12 acres of fine lawns, Herbaceous borders, Dutch Garden, topiary and shrub borders.

At Polesden Lacey

It’s an exciting time to work at the celebrated Edwardian retreat of Polesden Lacey. New areas of the property have opened to the public, making this a year-round attraction with lots of opportunities within the team. The property boasts glorious views of the surrounding Surrey Hills, as well as an impressive art collection, manicured gardens and a large National Trust Shop. Colleagues have a great team spirit with close links to the local community. This picturesque property is just four miles outside of Dorking, however you're likely to need your own transport to get here. Everything in the garden reflects Mrs. Greville's desire to impress her guests with lavish displays, garden tours are available through the day in summer and weekends in the winter.

What you'll be doing

As a hands-on Gardener, you’ll assist in making sure that the gardens are maintained to a high standard. You’ll be passionate and enthused and knowledgeable about the varied plants within the garden. This role will include a range of practical horticultural tasks to develop, enhance and conserve the garden and contribute to the delivery of projects. You'll be helping with hard and soft landscaping and general maintenance of the garden, such as mulching, pruning, leaf clearing and weeding. You’ll support with the planting and maintenance of trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants. You’ll be helping to cut the hedges and mow our fine lawns. You’ll also take ownership of specific areas of the garden ensuring the highest standards are maintained and healthy plants are available for our visitors to enjoy.

You’ll also support garden volunteers and help them to make the most of their time here. You’ll be expected to interact with the public on a daily basis, answering the many questions, or help out with gardening workshops, tours and helping set up events when needed.

Who we're looking for

The minimum criteria for the role is:

  • 2 years practical experience as a gardener/ horticulturalist/or ranger with garden interests
  • Competence and experience with machinery and equipment such as tractor, trailer, ride on mower, strimmer and hedge cutter
  • Some experience working with or leading volunteers
  • Willing to be a key representative covering 24hr 7day a week security as part of three person team
  • Willing to live on site at Hatchlands Park
