Chevithorne Barton Gardens were originally laid out as a wild garden in the Devon countryside, influenced by William Robinson and admired by Lanning Roper. There is a walled garden, summer borders and romantic woodland of rare trees and shrubs, with collections of magnolias, camellias, rhododendrons and azaleas. In recent decades, it has become the home to one of two National collections of Quercus, with over 440 differently named oaks. The house and gardens are part of a working farm. We are looking for a knowledgeable, collegiate working Head Gardener to lead a small team of one full time gardener and one part time gardener to work with us to develop the gardens, arboretum, orchards and vegetable garden in new and innovative ways over the coming years. You’ll be joining the team at an exciting and challenging time as we expand and move to opening 28 days a year. Cottage available with plenty of outside space, also the potential to keep animals and have a veg garden if desired. We are looking for a partner who will help us develop our vision of the garden, and who wants to live within a small rural community. 
 
The successful candidate will be responsible for: 


• Working with the owners to plan evolution and improvements to the gardens. 
• General garden maintenance. 
• Glasshouse and Polytunnel management 
• Maintenance of National Oak Collection 
• Herbaceous borders 
• Seasonal bedding displays 
• Pruning  
• Climbers 
• Spraying 
• Routine garden machinery maintenance 
• Limited woodland and chainsaw work 
• Management of the EH and NGS Openings 
• Management of the IrisBG database, website and social media content   
• Other duties including but not limited to tennis court, firewood production, assisting with livestock movement, putting up Christmas lights etc.  

 We are looking for a candidate with many of the following attributes: 


• Collegiate and enthusiastic hands on all weather gardener
• Knowledge of, or keen to learn about, maintaining and improving the Quercus collection
• Horticultural qualification at least RHS level 2/Foundation Degree or proven equivalent experience   
• Confident people skills, must be able to meet and greet visitors, give tours, liaise with other estate team members and outside contractors.  
• Well organised and self-motivated  
• Knowledge and experience of plant record management and accessioning botanic collections desirable but not essential. 
• IT and social media skills.  
• Must be confident working at heights and in water. 
• Comfortable working around livestock and dogs. 
• PA1 and PA6 spraying qualifications 
• Hard landscaping experience 
• Chainsaw qualifications
