We are undertaking a large garden restoration project over the coming months in Northern Ireland near the north coast with a view to opening the garden to the public in the early summer of 2021. The gardens extend to over 70 acres and include a formal Italian Garden, an English Garden, a Moon Garden, a Walled Garden, lawns and pleasure grounds planted with rare trees and shrubs. The main part of the garden has been allowed to deteriorate since the beginning of the 2nd World War and there will need to be an extensive clear out of weed species in order to ‘find’ the lost garden. This is a project akin to the restoration of the famous gardens at Heligan.
We are seeking someone with significant horticultural experience, preferably in a heritage garden, to fill the role of Head Gardener.
Initially the work will be clearing ground, restoring the drains and paths and reseeding to create a ‘blank canvas’. The successful candidate will therefore need experience and certification in chainsaw work and spraying.
The successful candidate will need to show a high level of horticultural knowledge in order to recognise rare or vulnerable trees and shrubs overgrown within the old gardens.
The work will require a fit and strong individual who is willing to work outside, even in adverse weather conditions.
On the completion of the restoration project, the role will become a more traditional Head Gardeners position. We therefore need someone with garden maintenance experience and in the use of large and small garden machinery.
Over time the role will require interaction with visitors as well as managing a team.
Knowledge and experience in the use of IT and budgeting would be helpful but not essential.
There will be an excellent level of salary, based on the applicant’s knowledge, experience and qualifications.
