To inspire and lead a full-time team and volunteer force in a renowned 30 acre garden in Worcestershire, that is open to visitors.
This is a hands-on role for someone with a strong horticultural background, who has a passion for plants, shrubs, and trees.
Purpose of role:
To utilise professional and inspirational expertise to lead this large, unique garden forward to fulfil its true potential. Working closely with the owner, trustees and staff to develop the garden.
Reports through: The Estate Manager to the owner and Trustees
Reportees: A team of three full time gardeners and 25 volunteers
Location: Spetchley Park Gardens, Spetchley, Worcestershire WR5 1RS
Main Duties
- To work collaboratively with the owner to establish a strategic plan for the continued evolution of the garden. Ensure effective delivery of the plan within timescales and agreed budgets.
- To work with the Operations manager to advance the visitor business experience, identifying new ideas and supporting implementation.
- To manage, inspire and educate the team of staff and volunteers, in the highest standards of horticulture.
- As the competent person, to ensure a positive approach to health and safety guidelines and implementing recommendations for the benefit of both staff and visitors in accordance with the annual review.
- To work with the Estate Manager to maintain the fabric and infrastructure of the buildings within the garden – identifying key areas to address and maintaining budget awareness of all projects.
- To implement and maintain a plant data base including the correct labelling of all plants and trees within the garden.
- To help with the organisation and implementation of other activities and events sponsored by the Charity – be an ambassador for the Spetchley Estate.
Financial management
- Working with the Owner, Estate Manager & Estate Accountant to construct, agree and manage a budget for the garden.
- Regularly review the use of contractors within the gardens.
People Management
- Ensure the team and volunteers are managed fairly, consistently and any HR issues are addressed should they arise.
- To conduct annual appraisals of all garden staff.
Training and Development
- To be responsible for own training and professional development and that of your staff.
- Actively continue to develop your knowledge of plants keeping abreast of new processes and techniques.
- To be a member of relevant horticultural organisations, such as RHS and IOH and other societies.
Relationship Management
- In all contacts with staff on the estate, visitors, and people with whom the estate deals, to maintain the high standards of friendliness, integrity, and co operation.
- To liaise with affiliated groups and to work with them for their benefit and of the Charity.
General
- To strive for high standards of visitor care and the improvement of the visitor experience.
- To show initiative and a focus in suggesting opportunities to be considered.
