Cothay Manor Gardens are set in 12 acres within a 40 acre estate. The magnificent gardens are consistently recognized as one of England’s most beautiful having been originally designed by Col. Reginald Cooper DSO in the 1920’s and since 1993, elevated to new heights by Mary-Anne Robb.

The gardens are open for groups by appointment and on selected Open Days.The gardens have been featured repeatedly in all major horticultural magazines and on TV.

The successful candidate is required to take ownership of the gardens surrounding the large country house located in Somerset. This position would suit a knowledgeable gardener with private estate gardening experience.

Applicants must have experience with a range of garden machinery including ride-on mowers, strimmers and hedge cutters.  The ideal candidate will hold a recognised horticultural qualification, have good plant identification skills, experience of managing large lawns, knowledge of pruning techniques and seasonal garden management.  This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced, self-motivated and physically fit Gardener to demonstrate their abilities in a beautiful part of the country.

We are passionate about our beautiful gardens and we are looking for an equally passionate, energetic, and experienced hands-on Head Gardener to take on the responsibility of managing the garden in close collaboration with our owner. The position reports to the owner.

Salary negotiable depending upon experience. There is a further opportunity for accommodation available with this position if that is desired by the applicant.

Required skills, knowledge, and experience

  • Practical experience with tractors and machinery.
  • Proven track record of high-quality horticultural work.
  • Planting of annuals and bulbs.
  • Weeding and seasonal pruning. 
  • Hedge cutting.
  • Lawn mowing and border edging.
  • Watering
