Landscape & Grounds Manager

The Wisley Golf Club is an exclusive private members’ club based in Surrey designed by Robert Trent-Jones Junior including a twenty-seven hole golf course and practice facilities.

We would like to invite applications for the position of a full-time Landscape and Grounds Manager to join our golf course maintenance team. The Landscape and Grounds Manager reports directly to the Director of Golf Course Maintenance. Under his supervision, the Landscape and Grounds Manager directs and participates in the operation, management, development and maintenance of the club’s grounds operations to ensure the upkeep of all gardens, landscape and planted areas is achieved to the highest standards. These include: lawns, woodlands, borders, gardens, river habitats, hard landscaping, lakes, streams, ecology areas and the wider golf course landscape.

The Landscape and Grounds position is one that requires skill, personality, ingenuity, a keen eye for detail, consistency and a strong desire to produce top quality results day in day out. This is a senior management position and so communication, ability to motivate self/others with a positive can-do attitude, and determination to over-achieve must be strong personal attributes in any successful candidate.

The key responsibilities include:

  • Strategically manage the estate planting programme, building the sophistication of plants with a wider palette
  • Plant selection, purchasing, conducting stock takes, and managing live stock levels
  • Prepare annual operating and capital budgets to include both maintenance and project schedules
  • Organise machinery training for all department staff to ensure they are competent and safe on its operation producing training plans, risk assessments and method statements as required
  • Department legal compliance in all key landscape maintenance and H&S areas
  • Successfully manage the club’s pest control programme
  • To manage a team of five assistant gardeners that comprise the gardens team
  • Planning of the team’s daily, weekly, monthly and annual work schedules
  • Allocate tasks to direct reports, ensure project goals are achieved to a high standard and all work is carried out safely and efficiently

We are looking for:

  • Minimum of three years successful working experience as a Landscape Manager/Head Gardener at a facility known for producing excellent quality
  • NVQ level 2 or level 3 in Amenity Horticulture, or HNC/HND in Amenity Horticulture
  • Skills in arboricultural techniques, basic chainsaw certificates – CS30 & CS31
  • PA1 & PA6a spraying certificates
  • Previous experience of, or ability to, lead a small team of gardeners/landscapers
  • A broad knowledge base in amenity maintenance equipment operation
  • Innovative, problem solver who’s highly organised and can think outside the box
  • A dynamic individual who is a self-starter and knows how to get the best out of their team
  • Someone who is reliable, honest, trustworthy and will do whatever it takes to succeed on any given day
  • Proficient in the use of I.T and computer systems: email, Excel, Word,
  • Rigorous record keeping commitment
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability and high personal standards to maintain a clean and safe work environment
  • Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the profession
  • Knowledge and vision for the creation of new planting designs
  • Willingness to work non-standard hours as and when work schedules and/or tournaments dictate

  • Competitive salary - £33,500 to £38,500 gross depending upon qualifications and experience
