Assistant Gardener

ASSISTANT GARDENER   

Start date: March 2020

Post type: Full-time, permanent

Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday 8.00am to 4.30pm April to September. 8.00am - 4.30pm Monday to Thursday and 8.00am - 3.30pm on Fridays from October to March

Pay & holiday: £19,000, plus 28 days holiday entitlement plus bank holidays

We have a new position for an assistant gardener to join our busy grounds and gardening team.  This is a fabulous opportunity to be part of the College’s development and growth.  There are a multitude of exciting landscaping and regeneration projects throughout the entire site to support the development plans. The successful candidate will join a team of ten grounds & gardeners, including the grounds manager who collective strive to maintain and improving the landscaped areas and gardens of the College.  The ideal candidate will possess a 'can do' attitude a genuine enthusiasm for horticulture and will take pride and interest in their work as part of a valued member of the team. You will join a great team of 12 staff with ambitious plans to complement the multi million pound investments in the colleges campus, the college is on a 1200 acre estate comprising of farm land, woods, sports fields and college campus and boarding house gardens. You will need a passion for plants, the landscaped environment, an eye for detail, and to have pride in your work, you must be able to work well on your own or as part of a team.

The Gardener is responsible for supporting the Senior Gardener in all aspects of the maintenance and improvement of Estate grounds and of ornamental gardens on this Estate

   

 Key responsibilities will include:

  • Garden maintenance tasks such as pruning, trimming, dead heading, and tidying plants, shrubs and trees in accordance with good horticultural practice and garden design requirements
  • Mowing with pedestrian and ride on machines
  • Help to develop and landscape new areas
  • occasional help with special events, such as car parking

Qualifications, skill and experience:

  • Proven experience of gardening work, ideally within a school environment or similar
  • Horticultural qualification level 2(desirable) and proven horticultural and gardening knowledge.
  • Passion, integrity and enthusiasm in day to day tasks
  • An ability to work pro-actively, both as part of a team and independently
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Full UK driving licence (essential).
