Job Details

Do you want to be part of something amazing, and join the UK’s leading horticultural charity? A place where we are driven by a sheer love of plants and the belief that gardeners make the world a better place, and where you will be working alongside some of the best horticulturists in the country.

RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey is the RHS’ flagship garden and one of the most popular in the country, attracting over one million visitors each year. A new chapter is unfolding for the garden, with a £65 million investment in science, horticulture and the visitor experience. We are looking to recruit 4 enthusiastic and passionate horticulturists to join our Seed and Wellbeing, Welcome and Riverside and Herbaceous Ornamental teams

The Seed and Wellbeing team will be taking responsibility for Wisley’s new Wellbeing opening in 2021, and you will play a key role in planting the garden that has been designed by Matt Keightley in collaboration with RHS science and garden teams. The Wellbeing garden will aim to identify how planting and landscape features impact our wellbeing and you will be part of developing that understanding as we assess the garden in coming years. The garden will be located at the entrance to our new centre for horticultural science and learning, so you will also be someone who enjoys interacting with visitors to help them engage with the garden. You will also be involved in the delivery of our Members’ Seed Scheme, our oldest member benefit, helping to collect seed from across the garden and despatch it to our members each year.

The Welcome and Riverside Team covers our exciting new welcome landscape, which includes an avenue of 140 flowering cherries, contemporary plantings, the driveway and carpark landscape. It also covers the atmospheric Pinetum, the Riverside Garden, the new Heather Landscape, home of the national collection for Erica, Calluna and Daboecia and a new ornamental grass garden.

The Herbaceous Ornamental Team cover all aspects of gardening in the central areas of the garden, including Seven Acres, the Glasshouse Landscape designed by Tom Stuart Smith and the oldest part of Wisley, Oakwood, an area first planted by George Fergusson Wilson. All these areas require intense and detailed maintenance and are rich in ‘plantsmanship’.

As a horticulturist, you will be responsible for the care, cultivation and maintenance of designated areas of the garden. You will be helping to drive forward enhancements across the 186-acre garden to make it a treasure trove of plantsmanship and creative gardening. You will possess a good general knowledge of horticultural practice or relevant specialism and the ability to lead and work effectively as part of a team.

Interviews will take place in February
