Skilled Gardener for Private Estate

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a skilled gardener to work on a beautiful family estate near Chippenham. The seventeenth century house is set within ornamental parkland (approx. 30-acres) with mature trees, shrubs and wildflower meadows, an organically run kitchen garden, and a nectar garden. The wider parkland of this 1000-acre estate embraces a lake and a series of ponds, created meadows & hedgerows, and is flanked by ancient woodland. Naturalistic planting flows through the gardens around the estate’s lodges and buildings. The ethos of the estate lies in nurturing habitat and ecology within the landscape, so an interest in wildlife conservation is an advantage.

We are looking for an experienced gardener (minimum of 3-5 years, with RHS Level 2 or equivalent) with comprehensive plant knowledge & proven horticultural skills. As a hands-on Gardener on this unique project you’ll work closely with the team of five gardeners to ensure that the gardens, ornamental park, meadows & habitat projects are maintained to a high standard.

You’ll be passionate and knowledgeable about the varied ornamental plants & native wildflowers within the gardens. The role will comprise a range of practical horticultural tasks to develop, enhance and conserve the gardens & biodiversity, and to contribute to the delivery of projects. You’ll be physically fit and will have experience in the following areas: competence in all aspects of garden maintenance; pruning knowledge of shrubs and herbaceous plants; planting and propagation knowledge; weed management; using garden machinery.

You will be highly motivated with an eye for detail, a desire to achieve high standards and an ability to work on your own initiative. You will be required to communicate effectively with the wider estate team, estate management and estate owners so a professional attitude is important. Good written & verbal communication skills, and organizational skills are essential, as is a full clean UK driving licence; PA1 & PA6 are desirable.

The position is full-time, 40 hours per week, with a starting salary of up to £25,000 DOE.

Please apply by clicking the 'Apply' button at the bottom of this advert and sending a full CV & covering letter to Rebecca Durham stating why you are a suitable candidate for this role
