Teach a trade. Build a future.

As a Specialist Production Instructor, you’ll share your technical knowledge and pass on your skills. By doing so, you’ll be giving prisoners the means to build a promising future. It’s an experience that could be life-changing, as you’ll see prisoners excel and learn under your guidance.

At HMPPS, we tailor learning and training requirements to individual needs. This is a highly rewarding role based within our specialist workshop, which gives prisoners the chance to learn about Horticulture. In this role, you’ll be responsible for HMP Elmley gardens and for delivering and assessing accredited vocational qualifications to prisoners so that they can prepare for a more promising future outside.

Working according to good horticultural practice, you’ll maintain field-scale soil husbandry and all growing plants and crops. Pest control and crop protection will be down to you, and you’ll set prisoners tasks which match their abilities. We will look to you to see that produce grown on-site is prepared and packaged properly. In addition, you’ll maintain the sports field teaching them your skills, so they can gain the necessary experience and qualifications to gain employment on release.

Induction, Health and Safety and COSHH will be your responsibility and you’ll support prisoners as they learn. Alongside this, you’ll need to set work schedules, assess their skills and supervise them in the working environment.

You’ll need to be at least 18 by the time you are employed. Ideally, you’ll have a Level 3 qualification in your field (or be working towards this), but we also welcome experts with equivalent experience. What’s important is your drive to help others learn – you’ll know your trade and be articulate enough to explain it. Your influence has the potential to last a life time, helping offenders build a career upon their release.

Join us and enjoy plenty of benefits, including a Civil Service pension, plus the chance to change lives – and society – for the better.
