Head Gardener – Live in
An enthusiastic, skilled and hands-on Head Gardener is sought for a privately-owned family estate in Henley-on-Thames, Berkshire.
The 57 acre estate comprises extensive planted areas, designed by Tom Stuart-Smith, including a ¾ acre walled garden, with a large glasshouse, trained-fruit, organic vegetable beds and soft fruit, as well as several areas of woodland, a 4 acre wildflower meadow, sports pitches, tennis court, cricket nets, outdoor swimming pool and a large deer park.
The successful candidate must be personable, self-motivated and highly organised. Plantsmanship of a high standard is essential, as well as a flexible and enthusiastic approach to the upkeep and enhancement of the estate. They will liaise closely with the owners and other household staff as well as managing a small team of part-time gardeners and contractors when on site.
Experience in a similar role is highly desirable, as well as horticultural qualifications to at least an RHS level-3 standard. The candidate must also have competency with a wide range of garden machinery and be capable of performing basic maintenance tasks. Spray and chainsaw qualifications are desirable, but not essential. An interest in beekeeping would also be desirable but not essential.
Duties and responsibilities
- Maintain and enhance the gardens, as well as management of the wildflower meadow, woodlands, sports fields and other estate areas.
- Planning and maintaining an organic fruit and vegetable garden to supply a wide range of produce for the house.
- Manage a small team of part-time staff, including contractors and occasional apprentices.
- Ensure that all health and safety obligations, including appropriate use of PPE, are observed at all times.
- Ensure that machinery and tools are maintained in good working order and used according to best practice.
- Being a key holder for the main house and being available for security purposes.
- Responsible for the welfare of a small flock of chickens and a herd of 40 deer.
- Assisting the household staff with jobs as required.
Hours: 8am – 5pm Monday to Friday (although flexibility will be required to cover occasional pet care and security)
Holidays: 20 days per annum
Accommodation: 3 bedroom cottage with its own garden located on the estate.
Salary: negotiable for the right candidate.
Employment: Open to single candidates or a job share for a couple.
