A rare and attractive vacancy has arisen at the private homes of one of the country’s foremost garden designers, based in the beautiful Lune Valley, Lancashire.  A Skilled Gardener with excellent plant knowledge and a genuine passion for horticulture is required to assist the Head Gardener, and in his absence be responsible for the garden and associated areas.  Applicants must be skilled and experienced gardeners with, ideally, an academic horticultural qualification at Level 3 or above.  The successful candidate will be required to provide direction and supervision to employees less skilled than themselves, in the absence of the Head Gardener.

This stunning and diverse site, nestled at the foot of ancient beech woodland at the foot of the eastern side of the Lune Valley, contains many features designed to impress at every turn.  The 12-acre property comprises parkland, an entrance forecourt, terraced gardens, a series of colour themed gardens and herbaceous borders, a lake, a bog and lakeside garden, a wild garden, a large terraced vegetable garden, a nuttery and orchard, a woodland and water gardens.  The gardens provide an impressive example of a large property containing most features of horticulture and design, such that it serves not only as a beautiful home but also as an example of this international garden designer’s work.  The variety of features, species, topography and conditions observed within the site provides an idyllic platform from which gardeners and the client may experiment with innovative ideas, and improve their skills and knowledge in parallel.

In addition to hands-on garden management (in association with the Head Gardener and property owner), the successful applicant will contribute to the preparation and implementation of management plans for the gardens on an ongoing basis.  The Skilled Gardener will assist, and in the absence of the Head Gardener be responsible for, supervision of garden staff and the management of any delegated projects, maintenance and daily garden tasks.  Contribution to all appropriate garden meetings and assistance of the Head Gardener will be expected in order to promote open and effective communication on work related issues amongst staff.  Applicants for this position must be confident in character, well presented and be willing to promote the public’s enjoyment of the garden through high standards of presentation and customer care.  The successful applicant will be required to share the weekend responsibilities with Head Gardener on a rota basis, i.e. greenhouse and nursery management, feeding the chickens and outing them to bed, and checking the security of the Hall and the grounds as a matter of course.

Applicants for this role should hold an academic horticultural qualification at Level 3 or above as well as extensive experience of gardening at a skilled level on horticulturally diverse private estates.  Applicants must hold a full UK driving licence, be physically fit and must be happy working in all weather conditions.  Continued professional development by way of relevant training courses will be offered to the successful candidate, to which attendance is expected.

Accommodation is provided in the local village by way of a two-bedroom house.  Council tax and rent are covered by the employer, with the successful candidate being liable for their own utility bills.

This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled gardener to take the next step in their career, or for an existing Senior or Head Gardener to join a well-known private estate in a beautiful part of the country, and to work for one of the country’s most respected garden designers.
