An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and driven gardener to maintain and enhance the beautiful gardens on a private family estate, located near Hastings. The Estate includes a 15-acre pleasure garden and is surrounded by pastures and woodland in the sunniest part of the country.
The position reports into the Head Gardener and the successful candidate will join a friendly and horticulturally passionate team of six. On a rotational basis, the gardeners focus on horticultural duties such as maintaining and enhancing two long herbaceous and mixed borders of approximately 100 metres containing perennials in pastel colours, a hot border of mixed perennials and shrubs, a white border, a tropical border, cut flower garden, terrace, front of house borders and various other decorative areas. They are involved in the planting, pruning, winter preparations and keeping the garden to a high horticultural standard all year round. The successful applicant will also have the responsibility of mentoring the WRAGS trainees and volunteers in various aspects of gardening.
Good horticultural knowledge, a genuine passion for plants and a minimum level 2 horticultural qualification is required for the role. A spraying certificate PA1/6 would be an advantage, however, is not a requirement. Candidates should be prepared to work outside in all weathers, have the determination and drive to get a job done and a have a vision for maintaining and enhancing the garden as required. The property is open to the public several times a year and is also a private garden, therefore being presentable and personable at all times is important. A full driving licence is essential.
In addition, the estate gardening team participate in a local in bloom, a community horticultural group devoted to enhancing the local village environment and support for this programme will be required (during the working day). All gardeners are also required to work one weekend per month for which they will be given time in lieu.
This is an excellent opportunity to work in one of the country’s great estates, and to utilise your horticultural skills in a beautiful and friendly environment. The Head Gardener encourages career growth and development and has an allocated budget and will allow a set amount of time to support trainings and development programmes relevant to the garden, should the successful candidate be interested. The owners also keep bees on the estate therefore if there is an interest or you have experience in beekeeping, there is an opportunity there to get involved.
