Scientist /Senior Scientist - Plant Reception Coordinator
Royal Horticultural Society – Science & Collections
Scientist £26,498 – Senior Scientist £30,914
RHS Garden Wisley, Woking, Surrey
(or RHS Bridgewater, Harlow Carr or Hyde Hall) by negotiation
Hours: Full-time (37.5 hours per week)
The threats from pests and diseases are a major concern to the UK, and to the nation’s gardeners in particular. Plant health in gardens is one of the four themes in the Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) science strategy (https://www.rhs.org.uk/science/pdf/rhs-science-strategy-2015-2019) and the Society had recently reviewed its plant health policies and procedures. As part of the review the RHS has decided to significantly invest in this area including funding the position of Plant Reception Coordinator.
This role will develop, implement and oversee a programme of activities to improve plant health practice in the RHS, and to provide authoritative and up-to-date advice and information to RHS members and the general public.
Depending on the knowledge, skills and experience recruitment will either be at the Scientist or Senior Scientist grade. A degree in a relevant biological subject, plus a higher degree or horticultural experience is required. Knowledge of horticultural practices, plant pest and disease diagnosis and management, and plant health regulation and certification is required. The successful candidate will have the ability to communicate to scientists and the public, and will be able to work effectively as part of a team and using their own initiative.
For further information about the role please contact Gerard Clover, Head of Plant Health: gerardclover@rhs.org.uk
