Live-In Gardener

Live-In Gardener required for private estate near Bruton in South-West Somerset 

A private family estate comprising 320 acres backing onto an AONB. The area includes managed gardens, kitchen garden, French-style courtyard, orchard, ornamental ponds, lawns, woodland, and ancient wildflower meadows. The impressive garden is open each year as part of the NGS scheme. A greenhouse is used for propagation, growing vegetables, overwintering citrus, and to house pelargoniums, geraniums and other ornamentals. The ancient wildflower meadows are designated SSSI and the owners are involved in an exciting wildflower enhancement project. 
   

This garden continues to be improved and developed by the motivated owners and so the successful candidate will likewise be highly motivated. Position would suit an enthusiastic physically fit novice or trainee keen to develop skills and the garden.  Seasonal staff will be brought in when needed. There will also be part/time gardening help and regular visits from a highly skilled consultant to train, guide and impart their considerable knowledge.       

Accommodation is a comfortable one-bedroom flat on the estate finished to a high standard with a spacious outside area to be enjoyed by the candidate. 

All aspects of horticulture are involved in the maintenance and development of the gardens including:

  • hedge cutting
  • topiary
  • lawns and grass maintenance
  • weed control
  • pruning
  • planting
  • propagation
  • planning and improving herbaceous borders
  • wildflower meadow enhancement
  • operate and look after a wide range of garden machinery

Duties include care of some poultry and domestic animals and security responsibilities when owners are away plus some handyman tasks. 

The successful candidate will be 25+ have a clean drivers licence and be able to supply references.
