The Best Western Plus Windmill Village Hotel, Golf Club & Spa is a vibrant and dynamic family business situated on the A45 as you leave Coventry towards Birmingham.   The business enterprise includes The National Motorcycle Museum & National Conference Centre and The Best Western Plus Manor Hotel - Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar and restaurant.

 

 

 

As our Head Gardener your main responsibilities will be to maintain and develop the hotels grounds to a very high standard. You will be creative and innovative and have a sense of excitement for ongoing and future projects, with a broad knowledge and passion for plants.

 

 

 

Applicants for this vacancy should have excellent horticultural knowledge and hold a recognised horticultural qualification. PA1 & PA6 spraying license is also necessary. The successful candidate will report to the Golf Course & Grounds Manager, and be required to work with a team on a hands-on, full-time basis. You must have experience in a similar environment with the knowledge and confidence to deliver the role described below.

 

Key responsibilities for the Head Gardener are;

•              Plan, instigate and monitor plant and tree care programs including design, landscaping, propagation, planting, irrigation, weeding, grass cutting, strimming and general garden and facilities maintenance.

•              Ensure the conservation, development and practical maintenance of the garden and policies – whether through delegation to other staff or personal participation - in terms of:

a.            Practical horticulture (e.g. managing trees and shrubs, roses, herbaceous plants, and bulbs; turf care; pest/disease/weed control; composting and soil improvement; hard-landscaping; path care, plant propagation);

b.            Project Management (e.g. supporting and taking the lead where appropriate, the implementation of the conservation & development plans for the restoration and regeneration of components of the garden & designed landscape;

c.             Plantsmanship (e.g. the identification, recording, labelling of individual plants and recognized collections, as appropriate);

d.            Research and development (e.g. research into historical precedents and practical contemporary solutions to inform proposed activities and projects, implementation of conservation plans; garden developments);

•              Management of plant collections, on going garden operations and horticulture features. On going responsibilities include allocating workload/ tasks to garden staff, developing routine schedules, conducting risk assessments, monitoring work standards and staff                        performance management.

•              Ensure that all garden administration activities are conducted in a professional manner including routine progress reporting, financial and plant records, purchasing of garden consumables, staff rotas, and time recording etc.

•              Responsible for the day-to-day care and management of plants, lawn areas, hedges, trees and the overall tidy and attractive appearance of the site.

•              Oversee the day-to-day maintenance of the Gardens Department, including duties such as lawn mowing, fertilizer/weed killer applications, tending to mixed/herbaceous borders, hedges, trees and shrubs.

•              Maintain flower beds, baskets, and boxes by watering, trimming, and performing other maintenance.
