An enthusiastic and hands-on Skilled Gardener is required to maintain and manage the gardens of a beautiful private Estate situated in the South of Wales.

Our client is a privately owned, 15-acre listed historic garden, where a stream tumbles through the garden passing unusual shrubs and trees, beneath arched bridges built in the eighteenth century. It pours into the calm and reflective ponds, over cascades, alongside spectacular borders within the round walled garden, through the extensive lawns. A greenhouse is on site and the lavish herbaceous borders are complimented by wildflower meadows and striking displays in vast urns and troughs.

The Skilled Gardener will have a hands-on role in the daily care and continuous development of the garden. They will be someone who takes pride in their work and will maintain the garden to an excellent horticultural standard. The garden is open by appointment between April and October to groups as well as one day per year for the National Garden Scheme and hosts a Rare Plant Fair.  The owner meets and leads the guided tours of the garden and the prospective Skilled Gardener will accompany the owner with groups of 20 or more. The greenhouse is used for propagation of plants for the house, therefore experience in propagation from cuttings and seeds to provide summer bedding, container and house plants would be essential.

The ideal candidate will hold a level 3 horticultural qualification or higher and excellent plant identifications skills. He / She will be able to identify a wide range of plants, pests and diseases, together with knowledge of their requirements to thrive. A minimum of 10 years of gardening experience is desired including charge of planting and maintaining herbaceous borders, ornamental containers, shrubs and trees in arboreta and pruning. The successful candidate must be enthusiastic, physically fit and willing to work autonomously. PA1 and PA6 chemical application for pest, disease and weed control and CS30 and CS31 chainsaw certificates will be required as well as a full driving licence.

He / She should be prepared to work outside in all weathers observing health and safety at all times, have the determination and drive to get a job done and a have a vision for maintaining and enhancing the garden as required. The willingness to mow and mulch and the ability to operate and carry out basic maintenance of a full range of garden machinery such as Kubota tractor and trailer, John Deere ride on mower, Honda pedestrian mower, leaf blower, strimmer, chain and pole saws is essential.

A 2-bed cottage will be available for the successful candidate on the Estate for a rental fee of £250 per annum. All bills including council tax will be the responsibility of the tenant. Occasional weekend work to water /ventilate the greenhouse would be required when the owners are travelling. Holiday entitlement is twenty-eight days per year including Public and Bank Holidays.

This is an excellent opportunity and would suit someone with existing National Trust or RHS experience to manage a beautiful and diverse garden.
