Collection Manager - Bowood Park and Bowood’s Woodland Gardens

Employer

Location
Calne, Wiltshire
Salary
A competitive salary, benefits and a three-bedroom Estate cottage are offered
Closing date
10 Aug 2019

A unique opportunity has arisen to manage and care for the nationally important plant Collection within Bowood Park and Bowood’s Woodland Gardens.

Bowood Park is regarded as one of the best-preserved examples of Capability Brown’s work, with a flowing mix of plantations and sweeping lawns leading down to a mile long lake. The Park contains a large collection of parkland trees, as well as 100 acres of pleasure grounds with a mature arboretum including 24 Champion trees.

The Woodland Gardens, originally laid out around 1854, extend over an area of some 50 acres and surround the family mausoleum, designed by Robert Adam. The collection (recently featured on BBC’s Gardeners World and in the RHS Garden magazine) centres around azaleas, magnolias and rhododendrons, including original hardy hybrids which were thought to be extinct.

Applicants must have extensive horticultural and arboricultural experience, with particularly good knowledge of ericaceous plants – this will be essential to assist with ongoing cataloguing of the Collection. In addition, the successful applicant will help to promote the Collection and deliver tours for pre-booked groups.

Practical and enthusiastic to directly care for plants on a day-to-day basis, the successful candidate will be an experienced horticulturalist who wishes to be ‘hands-on’. The position has no direct line management responsibilities, but will need to work closely with other departments (particularly Grounds and Forestry) to coordinate work within the Collection.

A competitive salary, benefits and a three-bedroom Estate cottage are being offered.
