Full Time Assistant Gardener

Denston Hall Estate

We are seeking a proactive individual to work within our current team of gardeners.

Duties will involve work within the main garden and parkland and work on the wider estate as part of the Denston Hall Estate team when needed.

 Main duties / tasks will vary on a daily basis and as determined by the Head Gardener and principles:

  • Carrying out a varied range of gardening duties, requiring a minimum amount of supervision and use of own initiative
  • Soil cultivation, digging, forking, mulching, watering, raking, weeding, litter and debris clearing, edging, pruning, seed sowing, bed preparation and planting
  • Good working knowledge of horticulture and plants
  • Lawn maintenance and cultivation
  • The use of a wide range of hand tools, horticultural machinery and powered hand tools, such as lawn mowers, strimmers, hedge cutters etc
  • Assisting the Head Gardener to ensure that all tools, garden equipment and machinery are correctly maintained and serviced and that they are kept in good and safe working order
  • Understanding of good Health and Safety practices
  • Keeping the Estate vehicles and tool sheds clean and tidy and tools stored securely at all times
  • Use of natural methods for plant protection and pest control, avoiding application of chemicals and pesticides
  • Undertaking work on the wider Estate as needed
  • Undergo training as required

Essential skills, interests and qualities

  • Most importantly, you will share Estate values and be a team player
  • Competent, physically fit and able to do manual labour
  • Have a track record of creating and maintaining gardens
  • Comfortable with working in all weathers and seasons
  • Ability to work well as part of a team or individually and share Estate values and be a team player
  • Knowledge and experience of implementing health and safety rules and legislations
  • Current and clean driving licence with category B
  • Good communication skills and a courteous personal manner to clients and staff

Desirable

  • Horticultural qualification
  • Chainsaw and felling certificate
  • First Aid qualification
  • Knowledge of organic gardening
  • Good eye for detail and takes a pride in their work
  • Eagerness to learn and improve
  • Ability to pass on knowledge and educate teams in the field
  • At least 3+ years experience of working in a private garden
