We are recruiting for an exceptional individual to join us as a Curator within Estates and Campus Services, provide operational leadership for the Botanic Garden, City Campus green space and Dundee University sports pitches.

The role holder will be a qualified professional horticultural and botanical expert providing direction for the Botanic Garden and grounds of Dundee University.  A key focus of the role will be to make a leading contribution to the delivery of a campus which supports the University's ambition to become Scotland's leading University.

The Curator will provide operational leadership for the Botanic Garden, City Campus green space and Dundee University sports pitches. The post holder will also be responsible for overseeing the section’s budgets and developing the Garden’s commercial activities to achieve financial sustainability.

 The post holder will engage with academic Schools to assist with the development and delivery of undergraduate programmes, including appropriate teaching on undergraduate and postgraduate modules and overseeing the Garden’s educational  and interpretative programmes. Instigating, contributing and assisting with student dissertation projects and research projects including, but not limited to, those associated with Botany and Conservation will be an aspect of the post. The post holder will ensure that the Universities Botanic Gardens operate to global botanical garden standards and pursue accreditation with BGCI.

Your priorities will include:

  • Ensure the highest possible horticultural and environmental standards are delivered across the Garden and Grounds of the University of Dundee.
  • Budgetary responsibility of the revenue (£450k pa) and capital spend for the Garden and Grounds.
  • Responsible for the recruitment, performance management and development of all staff (approx. 12) ensuring targets and objectives are achieved.
  • Maximise the commercial income potential in all areas including increasing visitor numbers to the Garden and coffee shop. 
  • Develop and provide opportunities for members of the wider public to participate in activities that support and promote education in horticulture, biology, the natural environment and related subjects.

Who we’re looking for:

  • Degree or higher degree in horticulture, botany or environmental management.
  • A proven track record of botanic garden curation within a nationally-recognised botanic garden.
  • Demonstrable experience of managing staff within a complex organisation.
  • Ability to operate strategically and operationally, with the ability to articulate a clear vision, set clear objectives and managed unplanned and complex situations in a calm and effective manner.
  • Managing budgets
